Why aren't I notified instantly when the blogs I follow post something?

  • Unknown's avatar

I have checked that my settings for my subscriptions are set to notify my email instantly when a blog I follow posts something new. NOTHING ever comes to my email (or junk mail). My email is not full and I DO get WordPress notices about bloggers who “like” my posts, so I know that WordPress and my email can communicate.

This “Instant” notification has NEVER worked on my account. PLEASE help me ASAP. I’ve reached out on my blog to other bloggers and they speak of similar glitches that mysteriously appear and disappear. It’s very frustrating.

This problem is really hampering my ability to keep up with the social networking aspect of blogging–something I’m sure you want to encourage!

Thanks and I hope I’ll hear from you real soon.

    Hi Lorna,

When you go to your Blogs I Follow page, can you click on “Edit List” and double-check that the email settings for each of the blogs you’re following are set to “Instantly”? Sometimes, your default settings and the email settings for each of the blogs you’re following may vary depending on when the default settings were changed.

Thanks, but did that already. All are set to “instant.”

When I visit your Dashboard, I see that there is an email address associated with your account that is different from the one in your Dashboard -> Settings -> General page.

Can you try updating the email address associated with your account by going to your Dashboard -> Users -> Personal Settings page and inserting your most current email address? You will need to click on the link in the confirmation email to confirm this change.

Yes, I tried setting up a different email just in case there was something wrong with the other one. That doesn’t seem to matter, though, so I’ll change it back to my original account.

    Thanks.

Can you let me know if changing your email address helped with this problem? If not, can you check your Spam/Junk mail folders once more?

Additionally, can you let me know if you do not receive notifications for all of the blogs to which you’re subscribed or only a few?

  • Unknown's avatar

Changing the email didn’t work. Nothing ends up in my spam folder. I do get notices from WordPress that bloggers like my posts, so I know WordPress and my email can “talk” to each other.

I’ve never received a notice of a new post from ANY blog I’ve ever subscribed to.

Thanks so much for you diligence in helping me with this issue!

    Lorna

P.S. I’m getting notification of your responses via my email.

  • Would you mind flipping your email subscription settings on each blog to Never, then back to Instant?

I’m hoping that a setting may have just gotten stuck somewhere along the line.

  • Unknown's avatar

I’ll try it. Heck, I’ll try anything! Then I’ll report back.

Again, thanks for all of your help!

I fliped them to “never” and left the page. When I returned, they were all back to “Instantly”. What do you make of that?

As I recall, when I first set up my subscriptions and was a total newbie to blogging, I set all subscription notices to “never.” Then I changed them to “instantly” when I saw the value in it. Maybe that bit of info can help you as you try to diagnosis this…

  • Now, this is just getting weird. Can you please try clearing your browser’s cookies and cache first, then flip between Never and Instantly?

I cleared the cookies, but don’t know how to clear the “cache.” How do I do that?

  • Can you tell us what browser (and version of) you’re using?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Internet Explorer 9

I’m using a computer with Windows 7 Home Premium installed as its operating system

    Hope that helps…

  • For IE 9, go to Tools -> Safety -> Delete browsing history

From there, uncheck Preserve Favorites website data and check both Temporary Internet Files and Cookies, then click Delete.

  • Is there any improvement now when you flip your subscription settings to Never then Instantly?

  • Unknown's avatar

I’ll got thru the process and report back. Do you get any sleep?

    Thanks so much!

No luck. I flipped them all to “never”, left the page and, when I returned they were all set back to “instantly”.

    Is my account possessed?

I am getting messages from WordPress about updates to my posts (when I edit a published post) that I never got before, so something has changed, but still no alerts when subscriptions to blogs have posted new material. And no alerts on follow-ups to comments even though I check the box after each comment I make.

I noticed that when I visit a blog I’m subscribed to, there is now a place to check if you want to get e-mail notices. A few days ago I checked those boxes. When you had me reset all my subscriptions to “never” (and they bopped right back to “instantly” for the 2nd time), I noticed that those boxes weren’t checked anymore.

    Is that unusual?
