Why aren't my posts appearing in any of the categories selected when published?

  My posts do not appear in any of the categories I select when published? For example, I post a dog photograph, mark it as being in animals and photography categories. It dos not appear in either. All was well for about 30 days but this started about four days ago and there have been no changes from me to the settings.
