Why Aren't Plug Ins Enabled is So-Called "Premium"?

  • Unknown's avatar

I am incredibly annoyed with WordPress – if I want to use plug-ins, I can’t unless I pay EVEN MORE for a “Business Plan” (and just try to find how much they want for that – why the secrecy, kids?). I just got stuck recently for 90 bucks for “Premium” – and WTF does “premium” mean? Now I’m supposed to pay MORE so I can use plug-ins? If I’m mistaken, please correct me. I think I’d rather take a bath on WordPress and switch to another hosting provider.

Hi there, plugins aren’t included in the Premium Plan and this has always been made clear on the pricing page: https://wordpress.com/pricing

Sadly, only sites with the Business Plan can upload custom plugins. If you’ve got the Premium Plan, you’ll only need to pay the difference between the two prices. However, all sites do get access to some plugins automatically.

There are also some incompatible plugins to be aware of which cannot be used on WordPress.com entirely. Those are listed here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/incompatible-plugins/

If you state what you’re trying to do though, there may be some alternatives, so feel free to ask.

  • Hi there,

To add to @torres126 thorough reply, almost all other hosting providers allow the installation of plugins and uploading of third-party themes. All that at a much lower price. It is worth noting though, that here at WordPress.com we take care of everything for you (backups, maintenance, security, updates, support), whereas other hosts don’t.

And there are web hosting providers who offer “managed WordPress hosting” for a much higher price, but they take care of the back end and you can use any theme or plugin you want. It’s all WordPress, so it’s all good. :)
