Why aren't Upload/insert buttons working in post menu?

I am a teacher who uses wordpress.com for students to post work done in our graphic design program. Beginning a couple of days ago students are unable to add media to their posts because the upload/insert menu buttons are non-responsive. Students can upload media through the media menu, but then cannot get the images to their posts. If I right click on the button, it will allow me to open the link in a new window, but again this does not help me get images to a post.

Prior to Monday we had no reported incidents of this problem. Now it is every computer, every account.

This problem is identical in Safari, Firefox and Chrome.

I have updated Adobe Flash to the newest version.

Our program uses a wordpress.org install for it’s main site and this site does not exhibit these problems using the same computers and browsers, only the wordpress.com sites.

We are running Macs with OSX 10.6.8.

I’m at a loss as to how to proceed. Any Advice is appreciated.

This has no effect on the problem.

I’ve tested the upload/insert buttons and they are working in my tests (using Firefox 7.0.1).

When you try clicking on one of the upload/insert buttons, do you see any warnings or triangle warning icons at the bottom of the browser in the browser status bar? If so, can you double click the icon and copy the error for me?

Would it be possible for you to check for JavaScript errors in the browser’s web inspector console (Safari/Chrome) or using the Firebug add-on for Firefox? Right-click on the page, select Inspect Element, and click the Console tab and then try clicking one of the insert/upload buttons to see if any errors show up.

Thanks for your advice. When checking errors I noticed that the gravatar feature of wordpress is being blocked by our school’s network.

As near as I can tell, this causes the disabling of the javascript buttons on any page that includes java reference to the gravatar. (The buttons work on the main dashboard and on some of the other interior pages.) So, I’m going to see if I can get the district to ‘loosen the screws’ so to speak.

I’ll update when I can get that to happen.

So, my school district unblocked gravatar.com and now everything works. I guess the blocked address was preventing the javascript from running correctly.

Also, I was looking at the forums at a problem described similarly and filtering was found to be the culprit there, too – though by an ISP in this case.

    Anyway…fixed is all that counts.

Thanks for the advice and willingness to help. Much appreciated.
