Why billed after 11 months?

My first payment for the WordPress Value Bundle was on 2 Jan 2012. I would have expected to renew it approximately a year later — would you not agree? So how come I was billed for the renewal just 11 months later, on 4 Dec 2012?

We renew the upgrade one month prior to the expiry date, this way you have more certainty that you won’t loose your domain name. Currently, your upgrade won’t expire until 2014-01-01.

OK, fair enough. But a note of explanation with the renewal notice would have been welcome, and your 90-day reminder, sent 4 October, was therefore plain wrong when it stated:
WordPress Value Bundle on your site “Kevan Pegley” is about to be automatically renewed in 90 days…
You will be charged US$99 for this upgrade in 90 days, on January 2, 2013, at noon UTC. -
