Why Buy A Premium Theme AND A Custom Design Upgrade?

    Hi,

I’m very new with this. I have downloaded (free) themes and while I’ve encountered one or two I like, the very small changes I’d like to make – removing the bold black line that appears when a jpeg header is uploaded in “Clean Home” – would require that I purchase the $30 Custom Design upgrade I believe.

IMO, it is pretty ridiculous to pay to remove a feature that showed up without any warning after doing something that is permitted by the theme. It’s almost like some sort of hidden cost. But, whatevs…

My question: I actually prefer the Linen theme. I also like React. If I pay $68 for one of them, why do I or do I still “need” the $30 Custom Design upgrade from WordPress?

And, can I do the things listed on The Theme Foundry’s site – http://thethemefoundry.com/linen/ – that seem to apply should I eventually become the owner of this theme? They have a few built in font options, for instance. And is it still possible to get help from their forum for a wordpress.com site?

In other words, what can’t I do with the premium theme that would necessitate me renting the Custom Design upgrade?

Thanks in advance for your help… :)

You would only need the Custom Design Upgrade if you wished to stylize the premium theme past what is made available to you via dashboard settings and options by the theme designer and wordpress.

In all likelihood, there are options on the self-hosted theme on the theme foundry site that are not available in the wordpress.COM version of the theme. The themes have to be modified to work with the restrictions and features here at wordpress.com.

The premium themes come with a 30 day money back guarantee, so if you buy one and it isn’t going to work out for you, you can get a refund.

One other thing I’ll mention is that CSS is a document that the browsers use to position and style the elements of a web page. It cannot be used to add functionality, so that means that if a free theme doesn’t have the functionality that you want, you cannot use CSS to add that functionality.

You can’t upload Themes on WordPress.COM – you are limited to the aprox. 160 Themes you can access with your Dashboard >> Appearance >> Themes

I was sure I’d already said that, but my answer appears to be gone.
