Why can I not delete my account?
-
I was wondering if perhaps you could explain this policy to me. I’ve read in other posts that you do not delete accounts – with no exceptions. Could you be more specific as to why? I am well aware that I can delete my blog, which I have done. But simply making the account inactive doesn’t work if I post to a blog that uses wordpress because it requires me to log in to post. Further – something I was unaware that when I signed up initially to wordpress, a gravatar was created for me. I also cannot delete that. I do not recall ever seeing anything mentioning that a gravatar would be created for me when I signed up – because I never would have done so had I known and not been able to opt out.

Username accounts are not deleted at WordPress.com and you will find the reasoning for that here http://en.support.wordpress.com/deleting-accounts/ but please note the following:
1. You can go to My Account->Edit Profile and remove all data except the account name and an email address. Create a throwaway email address and change the account email to that throwaway address. This only leaves the username behind.
2. To unsubscribe from email sent to you from WordPress.com, go here and click on “Block all subscription emails from WordPress.com”:
http://wordpress.com/#!/following/subsettings/3. To ensure the account is locked up tightly, visit this site, generate a password of 15-20 characters, and change the account password to it:

Of course I did not supply a blog address – I have deleted my blog.
My reason for posting is simple – I am asking about wordpress’ non-account-deletion policy and why they have it. I am also asking why a gravatar was created for me when i did not want one.

Thank you for your reply – but it really doesnt answer my question. I understand accounts cannot be deleted. I am asking why. Further, I am asking why a gravatar was created for me.

a gravatar was created for me. I also cannot delete that
Gravatar and WordPress.com are both owned by Automattic.
Go to this link http://en.gravatar.com/site/contact-us/ and ask for how to make your Gravatar account invisible. -
That is fair enough, I suppose, but I dont recall anything on wordpress’ site when I signed up that explained that a gravatar would also be created. If it was there, and I somehow missed it, it should be more prominent and made more clear that the two are tied together and that creating a wordpress account creates a gravatar. As I mentioned earlier, if I had known that I couldnt have one without the other, and that I couldnt delete either (content and making invisible aside) I would not have signed up.

I should also follow-up regarding making the account inactive.
You wrote: “Create a throwaway email address and change the account email to that throwaway address.”
With the greatest respect, please tell me how that makes any sense? In order to make my WordPress account essentially inactive, I have to create ANOTHER account, which I’ll never use? That seems very silly, and a waste of disk space, even if its only a k or two.
