why can I not use the premium features while I am trying out the $99 plan?

  • Unknown's avatar

PLease help. I am supposedly trying out the premium plan and I am scheduled to pay WordPress $99 on Jan 19th. I am trying to work on my website but each time I want to use the premium features it won’t let me. I have the option to click the ‘buy premium’ button but I don’t want to risk buying a second premium plan. Also I thought that with the $99 plan I would get chat support but that does not seem to be the case now, herefor I probably need to cancel that plan (but I can not find a way to do that!) and get the Business plan. However before I change I would like to chat with someone wether this would be a good fit for me. I have very little experience but my wordpress.org website that someone build for me (but has parted ways with me now) needs repairing because I tried to transfer it to wordpress.com. It transferred but not correctly. Please help, I need to do this myself but have a small budget. Thanks!!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi Marianna,

The site you’ve mentioned here is petalpassiondotnet.wordpress.com however your Premium free trial was registered for mariannasmith.wordpress.com, looking at the site it appears you do have access to the Premium features like Custom Design.

The Premium plan is per site, not per user. So to use Premium on multiple sites you ‘d need to purchase it for multiple sites. Similarly, if you’d like to try a free trial of the Premium plan on petalpassiondotnet.wordpress.com, you can do so for free, but you’ll need to register it again, using that site.

Also I thought that with the $99 plan I would get chat support but that does not seem to be the case now, herefor I probably need to cancel that plan (but I can not find a way to do that!) and get the Business plan.

Correct, while we try to offer chat support to Premium plan users when we have Happiness Engineers available, to get assured access to chat support requires the Business plan.

Thanks!!

I’d be happy to help you determine if Premium or Business is a good fit. However, please know that depending on what features were being used on WordPress.org, not everything may be able to work the same on WordPress.com.

See this article for some of the differences between the two:

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

Could you please give me the URL for your current self-hosted site, and what problems you’ve been experiencing trying to transfer it to WordPress.com?

Hello Alex, Thank you for helping out. The website URL for the website my developer build for me is http://www.petalpassion.net . When I transported it onto the wordpress.com site, the sliders/pictures for instance show just gibberish. It seems all the text is there but not the pictures. Also my logo does not show up. I have been installing some new pictures, they look good now. Now that I had a bit more chance to poke around wordpress, it might be better for me to start a new theme.
What I need to know first is how do I cancel my $99 plan that I installed on the wrong site? There is no cancel button.

I removed the Premium trial for you. You will not be charged the $99.

The site currently up at petalpassion.net definitely has features that cannot be easily imported into a WordPress.com site. For example, you mentioned the slider. It looks like your sliders are controlled using a plugin called Nivo Slider.

Plugins cannot be installed on WordPress.com, so that functionality won’t work immediately after the import. You’ll need to select a WordPress.com Theme that supports a slider, and then setup your images the way your theme needs them (usually by setting Featured Images in posts.)

Here are some themes that support sliders:

    https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/features/post-slider/

You may find other similar issues when moving from a self-hosted site to WordPress.com. The best thing to do is to keep your posts/pages/comments the same, pick a Theme, then setup your theme as best you like it — not necessarily trying to match every feature available with self-hosted.

Is there a particular reason you’re wanting to move away from the self-hosted site? Because you could always install the Jetpack plugin on your site that’s already built, which offers lots of the features available here on WordPress.com:

First of all THANK YOU! so much for your detailed help, it is much appreciated, I feel a bit more confident now. I am in my late 50 without any web building experience, (although I did build a website with my apple computer a few years ago but I had trouble promoting it and it is now obsolete). I tried to work on the petalpassion.net site that was build for me on wordpress.org but soon ran into tech-language that was waaay over my head, I could not follow it. Therefore I decided to move it to wordpress.com, hoping it would be easier. Although I’m planning to work with much less sliders than on my current site, (I plan to use mostly still pictures, but I was hoping to put my accolades/fanfare on a slider somewhere, plus a wedding slider maybe,) so the option would be good to have, but not essential. I have no problem purchasing a good theme and I know for sure I want to purchase a plan, probably the premium plan if it gives me enough support, otherwise I’ll go with the Business plan (does it offer a shopping cart?).
I really like the feel of the Candela Theme, I can see how I could organize my site with that lay-out.
I’m going back to my tools now and as I am on the right blog I’ll click on ‘buy premium’ and I’m assuming that I would get it installed on the right blog this time. Thank you for canceling the other plan and please let me know if this is the right way forward.
About Jetpack. I checked it out and read what it was, maybe this is the answer for me, I don’t know. Keeping in mind that I have no tech experience and nothing other than WordPress support/help, which has been great (and yes I’m signed up to go to the wordpress.com meeting next Monday, here in town), would you say Jetpack is the best way for me to go forward or would I be more successful using a nice theme on wordpress.com? Again, your advise is greatly appreciated.

With the Premium plan you’ll get access to the private support forums.

With the Business plan you’ll also get the private support forums, and live chat support is available from 7am to 7pm (EST) from Monday to Friday.

The Business allows you to integrate a shopping cart using either Ecwid or Shopify. Using those services has different pricing depending on how you use it, but I believe Ecwid has a free offering up ten products. Read more on how eCommerce can be set up on WordPress.com here:

    Sell Online on WordPress.com

More on the details of the Business plan here:

    WordPress.com Business [Redirects to Plans]

Another great perk of Business is that you have unlimited access to any of our themes.

Like so many things in life, “it depends…” :)

I think the bigger issue is whether you want to keep the work you have, or basically start anew.

If you really like how your current site is setup, but you just need to re-work different portions of it, you can likely do a lot by just adding new pages and removing old ones, and not really digging into the code. I find it’s more time consuming to transfer a site than a build a new one, so if you want to keep things running like they are, I’d probably stay put with Self-Hosted, and install Jetpack if you want to use some of our WordPress.com features while you’re at it.

If you want to start all over with the look-and-feel of your site, WordPress.com is much simpler to setup than a self-hosted site, and you can get things working in a way that easier to understand and maintain in the long-run. There will be some restrictions on WordPress.com that weren’t in place with self-hosted (like not using Plugins) but if you don’t want to dig into the code of a website anyway, WordPress.com will be easier for you to work with.

I do not at all like how my current website is set up so I would much rather start from scratch with a nice theme such as Candela and a good plan. If the Candela theme is free with the Business plan and costs $79 with premium, it would only be an extra $71 or so and I would get more reliable chat support. Do I understand that correct?
Next issue: I’ have re-ordered the premium plan for the petalpassiondotnet site and I’m trying to figure things out right now but after ‘mapping’ my site (why did I do that??) I’m really confused as I now encounter the ‘live and existing petalpassion.net site as well as the one that I started building there, and I can’t figure out how I get to which one. So to start from scratch I probably have to move the current site back to wordpress.org, so it does not interfere with my new theme/ website. Or can it be deleted? Whats next??

Off course I want to keep the current site up as is, until I have actually created a work-able website myself.

Your Premium free trial is all set on petalpassiondotnet.wordpress.com .

Since you want to leave your current petalpassion.net site running, you don’t want to go through the domain mapping process yet. Once you have your site on WordPress.com setup the way you like it, we can setup that domain mapping so that your readers no longer see “petalpassiondotnet.wordpress.com” but instead see your domain, “petalpassion.net” — that’s what the Domain Mapping does.

So for now, I’ve removed the Domain Mapping, just to keep things clear for you. We can guide you through the mapping process once you’re ready to make the switch away from the self-hosted site.

    Whats next??

Now that’s cleared up, so your current site at petalpassion.net is running per usual.

You can work on your site here at WordPress.com without doing anything to affect your old site, and we’ll update your Domain once the site’s ready.

To view your site as it is right now, just visit http://petalpassiondotnet.wordpress.com/

To get started, I’d walk through the steps here:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/making-a-business-website/

Setting that static front page and making a contact page will give you a little more feel of how to go about designing your site using our tools.

Alex Thanks a Million! your help is the best. I’m confident now that the business plan is probably the best way for me to go, the reliable chat support, I know I will need it and I can see my site on the Candela Theme much better than trying to imitate my current site. I’m really exited to get started now, your support is/was super!

Aww, thanks! I try to help. :)

Really glad you be staying with us on the Business plan. I think you’ll enjoy working with it.
