why cant delete pages from heading?

  I trashed the “about page” and a duplicate “John” page from the pages word press admin side, but they still appear in the site’s headings? Any suggestions to eliminate?

  Remove them from your custom menu > Appearance > Menu

  With a custom menu https://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/ you can include only the items that you want to display. On that page on the bottom right hand corner you can disable this setting:
  Menu Settings
  Auto add pages
  __ Automatically add new top-level pages to this menu
  “save menu”
