why can't delete user?

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi there, I sense there is a good reason for this – but the reason is not clear – why user can’t be deleted – it’s not stated as far as I see. Words go around other words … such as account / site / setting / inactive etc but why the initial title for ‘deleting user’?

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/deleting-accounts/

Renaming accounts is nice option but… nothing to say why not ‘delete’…. Surely deleting account should delete site / account / user etc?

Whatever your angle for it and regardless of what I think, I think it’s extremely good practice to say why not in this page.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi –

Accounts cannot be deleted for your own privacy protection. Preventing someone from registering and using the same username in the future, impersonating you. Automattic Inc. owns WordPress.com and other products (https://automattic.com/) that do require a WordPress.com account. This is why you may inactivate your account but no fully delete it.

When you register an account on WordPress.com you agree to their Terms of Service (http://wordpress.com/tos/)

Let me know if I can help you with anything else =)

Thanks. So I see the potential for impersonating…

Please add that description to the page and consider it helpful for users in understanding why delete it not possible… or not have another way of preventing that.

Also I would ask that you also change the title of the page / the header to reflect you can’t ‘delete’ it – it’s a bit misleading… something like ‘de-activating accounts (deleting is not possible)’ will make it clearer.

It would also help me if you let me know (copy and paste if you like) which parts of the TOS you’re referring to just so I read into it a bit more. Nothing heavy just which bits mean what for you.

Final part below is about user IP’s, time, dates and other details – If you don’t keep them then perhaps it’s much less of privacy case and you can ignore these paragraphs below completely… worth a read perhaps (let me know what you think)….

Account names or User names are perhaps the more critical thing here rather than the shells of old accounts with associated data… maybe say what data you do keep so I don’t have to guess or imagine so much…

For example if you keep the data of users to stop impersonation then the other details could be deleted as a safer way than keeping all the data yourselves and instead a list of names is kept that are unavailable to new subscribers and across your company system… what do you think?

I’m sure your data is quite secure, but even internal things ‘can’ and do happen/leak etc… and this too can be considered a ‘potential’ problem – and maybe best practice for privacy is to delete / strip them when not needed. I can see this happens quite well already at wordpress if users remove their data themselves. Thanks

  • Hi again =)

I’m just a volunteer. Their policy at WordPress.com is that they don’t delete accounts. I really can’t speak to it anymore than that. You will need to contact staff if you have specific questions or concerns not covered by https://en.support.wordpress.com/deleting-accounts/

    Best Wishes!

How do we contact the staff?

  • Unknown's avatar

    About what, please?

[URL removed] is no longer available.
The authors have deleted this site.

Deleted blog URLs are not recycled, regardless of who registered and deleted them and the only exceptions are made are for URLs that were deleted 2 or more years ago. http://en.support.wordpress.com/recycling-blog-names/

You can register another .wordpress.com blog http://en.support.wordpress.com/register-a-blog/

Then if you wish to you can register a domain via a domain mapping upgrade because it does not matter what the underlying .wordpress.com address is when you are domain mapping.

Excuse me, I deleted that blog, please do not post the title on here.

I have specific concerns I want to talk to the staff about regarding account deletion, not merely blog deletion.

  • Unknown's avatar

Please tell me how to contact the staff that lizkarkoski references in her earlier reply.

  • Hi –

I tagged this thread ‘modlook’ for you. That will notify staff that you need assistance. They will contact you here. Please excuse my brevity I am writing from my phone.

    Best wishes!

Thank you, can you please also have user timethief remove her most recent reply containing the title of my deleted blog? That should be private info.

  • Your blog address is linked to your user profile. Click on ‘member’ under your user account and you will see your blog listed there. You will need to edit this in your settings in order for it to not show up there. If you click ‘member’ under my username you will see there is not a blog listed.

  • Unknown's avatar

No, I am talking about this forum thread. Timethief referenced the title of my deleted blog at the beginning of her last reply. I would like her to remove that from her reply.

  • The deleted blog address is visible for any WordPress.com user that clicks the ‘member’ link under your user name.

I do not believe @timethief can edit her reply. She is a very experienced user and will know the answer to that.

Staff will contact you here regarding your concerns.

  • Unknown's avatar

Ok, will the deleted blog address be completely removed from my profile soon since I did delete it?

  • You can edit what is linked to your user name here:

Thank you for the help. I will wait on the Staff to reply for my other concerns

  • No problem, take care and best wishes =)

How long typically until staff replies?

  • Staff answers in order of requests, responses are generally slower on weekends. You may hear back on Monday. Again, I can’t promise a time of response, it just depends on how many are ahead of you.
