Why can't I add a group of images from the Media Library to a gallery?
-
It appears there is no way to group previously uploaded images into gallery container – only images that are uploaded during a post / page edit session are available for inclusion in a gallery.
Images that have previously been uploaded are not made available for grouping – only images that are uploaded during the process of, add media. From my viewpoint, a button could be added in each image’s Show area or a check box could be added on the Media Library listing page to indicate which images are destined to be included in a gallery container.
Because of this issue, I’ve had to resort to using Gallery Shortcode to address the issue of adding / deleting images to / from a gallery object. Additionally, galleries created using shortcode don’t respond the same when editing their settings as those created using the graphical method.

Why can’t I add a group of images from the Media Library to a gallery?
Hi,
You would need to use the Add Media on the Add New — or Edit — Post/Page screen, then upload the images that you’d like to use for the gallery on that particular post or page.
If you’ve already uploaded some images to your Media Library, they’ll say (Unattached) in the Attached to column. You can check multiple images, then click Attach to attach those images to a post or page.
You can see the Unattached Files support page for some information and screenshots on reattaching files:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/media/unattached-files/#reattaching-files
a button could be added in each image’s Show area or a check box could be added on the Media Library listing page to indicate which images are destined to be included in a gallery container.
I completely understand, and we’re aware the Media Library can use some love. It’s on our radar, but I can’t give a time frame as to when that’ll happen. We appreciate your feedback.
In the meantime, the above instructions will get you to attach unattached images to a post or page.

Hi Bryan,
Sorry. This doesn’t work for me. Unless all of the images that will be in a gallery are uploaded at the same time, they aren’t accessible from the gallery. Not sure this makes sense, but I have to add more images over time to each gallery. If I upload the images at the time that the gallery is created, everything works out fine. But, if I add images via upload directly to the Media Library at a later time – they don’t appear in the gallery. And, there doesn’t appear to be any way to add them to the gallery from the Media Library link (via Edit Gallery icon).
What ends up happening if I use your graphical gallery editing tools is that I have to upload the same images over and over again. Obviously, this is using up my available disk space, but also is creating new IDs for the same images and it is very confusing (if not impossible) to manage all of this. Additionally, you mention to attach the images. This does work for Pages / Posts, but does this work for Galleries?
So, I’ve had to switch to just using gallery short code and just upload the images one time using the Media Library. This is not my preference because the graphical method is much easier for me to understand, but it works – sort of. The one remaining issue with this method is that there does not appear to be any way to order the images the way I’d like. The order type that would work for me is, menu_order. However, because the Edit Gallery icon does not recognize galleries created using short code the same way as ones created graphically (i.e. the Gallery link is not activated) image order is not an option. I’ve opened a separate support request on this topic.

Images have to be attached to a post to appear in the post’s gallery automatically. At this time, the only way to attach images to a post is to upload them while writing and editing the specific post. Uploading them through Media -> Add New currently only assigns them as Unattached, and there is no way to attach those at this time.
-
Obviously, this doesn’t get it done. Adding images by uploading them each time they are going to be used in a gallery is confusing and wasteful. There is a way to attach an image to a page or post, but that still doesn’t address the inability and inconsistent behavior of images within a gallery – which is different based on whether the gallery was created using the Visual tab or with shortcode in the Text tab. Guessing that this has something to do with how IDs are handled globally.
So, any idea when some / any of this gets fixed? Looks like other have been trying to work around these “short comings” for at least a couple of years.

At this time, I recommend sticking to the shortcode for something like this.
When inserted through the Visual Editor, galleries work automatically off of attached posts. That may be changed in a future version of the core WordPress software, but I don’t have any specific details for that.

I definitely agree that shortcode is the way to go. However, this doesn’t solve all the issues I’ve already mentioned. The main problem remains, image display order. It would be great if I could use, orderby=”menu_order” and then order the images using the Order text box after building & populating the gallery. But, since the Gallery () link is not show for subsequent edits, there is no way to set the order.
When might this specific issue be addressed?

You should be able to edit the shortcode in the Text editor tab (not the Visual tab).
Is it disappearing from there?
