Why can't I answer comments all of a sudden?

  I no longer have the device that shows I have a comment on my home page. I have to go into comments on the dashboard and now I can’t even respond.

  You can see if you have comments from anywhere on WordPress.com, except the forums, via the notification icon to the left of your name (on the far right of the admin bar). This will glow orange when you have new notifications, including comments.
