Why Can't I Claim A Domain Name That Doesn't Exist?
-
Hi everyone, this is my first post on the support forums – my name is Ray :-) My question/problem is pretty simple and I would appreciate any help: I just created my WordPress site with the URL ‘thefreedomofstyle.wordpress.com’, however my first preference was with the ‘the’ dropped, as in ‘freedomofstyle.wordpress.com’, but was told that it already existed. Upon visiting that site however, it comes up with a message ‘this wordpress site no longer exists.’ Why then am I not able to claim it? I hope an administrator will be able to assist me towards possibly claiming this apparently free domain name for myself. Thank you once again,
Ray

Sorry – gone is gone forever. The rule prevents someone from impersonating you with your old blog name.
prevents problems – a site with family pictures is deleted and another person grabs the name and puts nudes on it – then family members visit the site not knowing the old site was gone –
