Why can't I create a custom front page for my Child of 2012 theme??

I created a custom front page template, but apparently applying it breaks some conditional statement somewhere that operates based on the mere name of the template.
The content which normally is 960 px for the front page template narrows to about 624 px by simply changing the template name from “front page template” to “custom front page template.”
I’ve changed none of the code within — simply changing the template name breaks the layout.
I’d like to create a custom front page template, but I’d like the content to stay the same width as the regular front page template. How can I achieve that?

I created a custom front page template, but apparently applying it breaks some conditional statement somewhere that operates based on the mere name of the template.
Try using a different name for the template, a one-word name even.
