Why can't I disable comments on all pages?

On this page: http://en.support.wordpress.com/enable-disable-comments/
It says that you can disable comments on all posts and pages, and I want to disable all posts on my pages, but there is no checkbox for this. The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

If you go to your Settings -> Discussion page which would be here: http://davidandkatya.wordpress.com/wp-admin/options-discussion.php You’ll find an option under default article settings, which says “Allow people to post comments on new articles” If you untick that, then the default for new posts will be that people cannot comment, you can swap that for individual articles by using the discussion module on that post (if you can see that then open screen options and tick discussion) the instructions for that are here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/enable-disable-comments/
I assume that this will not change the current comment status for the other already published posts/pages, though I am not certain of this. So if you want to change that then use the Bulk editor described here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/enable-disable-comments/#bulk-editing-comments Go to all Posts, then click the posts you want, select Edit (under Bulk Edit) and then click next to Comment, and select ‘do not allow’. That will disable comments on the posts.

@danielisreading: Correct, changing the comment status in Settings > Discussion doesn’t affect existing posts/pages. This includes unpublished drafts, so, if you want to be precise, “already published” should be “already created”.
We get similar questions every couple of days or so, often by users who claim they’ve read and followed the official instructions, so apparently the Support doc confuses many users. I believe I’ve written clearer instructions here:
