Why can't I edit this?

  • Unknown's avatar

I have written an article and done the title, but in my link it reads:

    remembering-james-garner-2

Before, I could easily edit but I cannot for the life of me, edit the 2 to get rid of it, as it doesn’t look right and looks messy :(

    Can anyone help please?

    Thanks

In the new editor you need to go down to the left hand side at the bottom where there should be a cog wheel symbol and the words Advanced Settings. If you click on that to expand it you should see the first box is ‘slug’ and this is where you can change the link.

Tried that, changed it, clicked ‘update’ it still says the same 😐

  • @sharonharvey2
If it doesn’t want to update in the new editor, try the classic editor instead. You can reach the classic editor by going to the WP-Admin dashboard and click on Posts ->All Posts ->Edit. If you don’t see the post slug option, click on Screen Options at the top and make sure it’s enabled.

Nope, done all that…it wasn’t ticked..so ticked it…nothing still works :(, don’t understand as I’ve always been able to edit….any other advise please :(

  • Unknown's avatar

Tried again…nope the permalink just won’t work :(

  • In that case, please try clearing your browser cache and cookies. Could be the current slug is “stuck” in your local cache. Let us know if that also doesn’t fix it.

Just a thought, but could there already be a post with the same slug? Perhaps it’s not letting you have 2 posts with the same slug. Have you written a post with a similar title before?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Ah…hang on then…let me please check….stand by!

  • Unknown's avatar

Ok…think I’ve conquered it! @Bluegirl12 you were almost correct – similiar wording so don’t know if that caused it? I had altered the other one slightly to sound different so obviously it did not like it? The other one said remembering James Garner – so I altered it to 3 months on, and then altered it again to ‘Thinking’ so I take it it got all confused? I thought once I had changed it it would be ok…?

That perhaps could be why it showed that post rather than the recent one?

Here’s the newly amended title now (can you check to see if it works please and has lost the 2 at the end as it seems to have done at my end?) https://sharonharveywriter.wordpress.com/2015/07/19/remembering-james-garner/

  • Showing the correct slug for me, so it looks like you’ve figured it out.

On another topic, I noticed that when I opened your home page there was no way to get back to your blog posts. The Blog link merely opens a single post from 8 Sep 2013 and the only way to get to your posts is the Recent Posts widget way at the bottom of your sidebar.

If interested, you can see the instructions for creating a blog page that shows your posts feed here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/front-page/#optional-create-a-blog-page

Your link works for me – glad you got it sorted @sharonharvey2 :)

No, thank you @bluegirl12, ingenious thinking on your part!!

Have another question please – on the wordpress app….there is a bold, and an italic but no underline….where is that please?

Thank you too you kokkeih, yeah I did that as I have looked at other peoples and have followed their example to help me get started…. Doesn’t it look right and proper then?

I’ve read that link…is that for blog reasons only… IE if you are just a blogger as its called? I do do posts as you have noticed but my site is not mainly for that, or it wasn’t initially….

  • Doesn’t it look right and proper then?

It looks just fine. But consider this: if someone lands on your blog’s home page, they’ll see your welcome message, your photos, and that one post from two years ago. There’s no easy way to get to the rest of your posts. In fact, unless they spot the widget they might assume there aren’t any posts. So why subscribe to a site that never publishes new posts? Or someone reads one of your posts via a link they got on Facebook. They click on your “Blog” link because they want to read some of your older posts. Except there are no older posts to read and aside from pressing Back in their browser they can’t even get back to the post they just read.

While blogging might not be your reason for having this site, blog posts are what draw people to your site, what will convince them to subscribe, what they’ll share on Facebook, and what makes search engines index your site. They don’t have to be on your front page, but you want readers to be able to find them.

So, my advice is to make this change, but if you don’t want to, there’s nothing wrong with it. Just be aware it will influence how visitors interact with your site.

Have another question please – on the wordpress app….there is a bold, and an italic but no underline….where is that please?

Which version of the app are you using? Android or iOS? In the editor on the Android app on my phone Underline is the third option in the toolbar, right next to bold and italic. If it’s not in the iOS app I suggest you post in the iOS app forum on WordPress.org, as we don’t really provide support for the mobile apps in this forum: https://apps.wordpress.org/support/

However, be careful with using underline on your site. It is not recommended to underline content on websites, as underlining is the most common way to indicate that a piece of text is a link, and underlining text that is not a link can cause unnecessary confusion with readers. If you want to emphasize text, rather use bold or italics.

Thank you very much @kokkieh again for that invaluable piece of advice….I had actually wondered why people weren’t following, I had begun to wonder if I was boring lol!! 😂

I shall make that change then… And show you back here to a see what you think.

I am using iOS currently, yes I’ve been advised of that forum before, unfortunately I don’t have any luck with help 😕 I make posts but get no answers or even sometimes it’s been known for me not to be able to log in for some unknown reason so I’ve given up.

Oh ok….another invaluable bit of advice then…..

Well, that will teach me to follow what others do… I did it as I said to help myself get started showing me the way forward as what others had done and succeeded in.

  • Let me tag this for staff in case they can help regarding Underline not being available in the iOS app.

And if you need any help setting up a blog page, just let us know.

    Hi there,

When the new editor was launched in the iOS app, some of the less-used toolbar buttons were removed, including the Underline button. If you’re curious about that change, you can actually read more about the decision starting from this Github issue about it:

    https://github.com/wordpress-mobile/WordPress-Editor-iOS/issues/315

If you want that Underline option, you can currently turn off the newer visual editor in the iOS app by going to Me > Account Settings > Visual Editor and turning the visual editor off there. That will give you the older editor with its toolbar options.

Hi guys…sorry for the delay in replying..been very busy with the website, trying to decide what to do with it…

First @rachelmcr thank you for that information…I shall check the link out and take it from there…thank you for your help.

Also, @kokkieh, thank you very much for your offer of help with the blog page…still deciding which is best… I appreciated your insight which certainly made me think and wonder if that’s why I wasn’t getting any…well follows or comments at least…I am linking my articles to twitter…IE I go on Twitter and link an article so they have to go there physically too read the article but I’m not getting any comments or people clicking to follow or wanting to know if anything else of any kind is posted.. I am still trying to work it out because I have …well not copied…but took note of other writers sites and then used their ‘template’ to use on mine but make it my own design….So I am trying to work out why they are getting comments etc, yet I’m not….unless it’s because they’ve actually had books published and I’ve not been that lucky as yet.
