Why can't I edit this?

So I am trying to work out why they are getting comments etc, yet I’m not….unless it’s because they’ve actually had books published and I’ve not been that lucky as yet.
Being published is a big factor. The vast majority of authors with successful blogs had an established reader-base before they got a blog, so their existing readers also hang out on their blog. They then also get new readers this way. It tends not to work the other way around for unknowns like me and, I assume, you.
But it’s not the biggest, nor is it the only factor. Sharing your posts on social media is good for getting your blog out there, so is commenting on other blogs – leave a meaningful enough comment and not just the blog owner, but probably some of their regular readers as well, will visit your site to return the favour.
Also make sure your posts actually invite comments. There are blogs I follow religiously, but I seldom comment because the way the posts are written don’t invite comments. They don’t offer anything to discuss. If you want comments, make sure you write your posts in a way that they are really the start to a conversation.
When posting links to Twitter, make sure the tweet you include is also an “invitation” to come read more. Just be careful of clickbait tweets/titles/headlines.
You might want to look into the Blogging U course about to start on the staff blog The Daily Post. That course covers generating engagement on your site, among other topics: https://dailypost.wordpress.com/2015/07/27/august-in-blogging-u/
You can also look at another forum volunteer, Timethief’s blog. It has been and still is an invaluable resource to me for learning about blogging. I suggest you start with links #4 and #5 in this article: http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2014/01/02/blogs-are-about-comments-and-commenting/

You speak a lot of common sense lol! Seriously, what I mean is sometimes you need someone to tell you something for you to think ‘Oh my goodness, I never thought of that, how correct! So thank you for pointing that out to me.
I am a writer..though unfortunately not lucky enough to get published in either magazines or indeed have books published as yet..hopefully that luck will soon change. Are you a writer too, but more like me not lucky enough to be published going on your ‘unknowns’ comment.
I do share my posts on Twitter mostly…so what you are saying is when I comment on another bloggers site, like my writing friends one…leave a well worded comment and it will send them and their loyal readers and followers to my site then and hopefully what they see on my site will then encourage them to stay..(?)
Right ok re invites to comments..don’t wish to be awkward or appear to be sarcastic..that is not my aim here…but do you mean like literally invite or just in the wording to invite so they know by what I’ve written I’m encouraging -or- inviting them to reply to me..? That’s interesting…as I would’ve thought that my article below actually would have invited comments, given the subject and for those fans of the show and remember the character it was open for them to comment at what they thought of the decrease of the characters health over the years resulting in the current health problem.

Two very interesting links you provided, I shall have a look…I’ve had a look at timethiefs blog before but shall have a look at what she’s written about being more inviting so people are encouraged to visit your site and consequently follow.I have also bookmarked this site and wondered if this was any use for the same subject:
https://learn.wordpress.com
Another question – I have been looking at my website and wondering, aside of making another site for my photography, whether i should make another site for just blogging – ie every day posts, that I have been doing…but maybe not the Doug article? Any advice on that as well as the above?Thank you for the already invaluable advice and tips you have given me so far.

Trying to be, yes, but as yet also unpublished and in fact still struggling to actually finish a first draft :-)

Exactly. Your username links to your site, and I’ve discovered several bloggers by clicking on usernames after I’d liked/appreciated a comment of theirs on other sites. It won’t make people flood to your site, but it’s the best way to get serious readers (as opposed to those who only follow you so you’d follow them back).

Yeah, this isn’t an exact science, mind. An invitation to comment can be implicit or explicit. I understand it as the post must be open-ended, i.e. leave room for others to add their thoughts. Even then it’s no guarantee people will comment and some of my most commented posts were just a random thought/rant/lament that I put out there without expecting any comments. I’m afraid it’s rather unpredictable. And posts on a specific show, for example, are only likely to attract comments if your readers are as big fans of the show as you are.
The learn.wordpress link is the official tutorial for WordPress.com. Also very useful in especially learning the mechanics of the site, but not so much for blogging itself.

That’s really up to you. If you have the energy and the will to run multiple sites and prefer to have the different types of content separately, then go for it. On the other hand, personally I don’t have any problem with one site having a jumble of content-types – I do it that way myself. Both ways have their pros and cons, and their supporters and detractors, so pick what works for you.
If you want feedback on specific posts or aspects of your site, also remember you can post in the Community Pool that publishes every Monday on The Daily Post. It’s a great place to connect with other bloggers, get their feedback and give yours in return. You can find the latest edition here: https://dailypost.wordpress.com/2015/08/10/community-pool-127/

Ah, then I don’t feel so bad since I am working hard at my first published work ;-)
Point taken Re Username. I am constantly learning and that will never cease :-)
LOL, you are spot on there, it is unpredictable!! Well…as for that particular post, yeah it is a character from that show BUT I was also inviting comments from that particular medical organisation. Guess I maybe failed at that!
Re WordPress link. Ok, Well, I will put that aside for now then and concentrate on the others you helpfully provided.
Hm…Point taken. I have actually taken a look at your site, and its rather good lol. Very interesting. Yes, I think you are probably correct and its down to once you have made that important connection with people you will then hopefully only move forward and onwards.
Another invaluable link you provided….only had a quick look so will bookmark it to look at it again.
Ok…how do I get the attention of staff members…? I had another problem which a member/volunteer was helping me with till it got out of their personal knowledge and said ‘I will flag this up for a staff member to help you with’. This they did and ‘bdukes’ helped tremendously, but unfortunately after going away and then returning and becoming ill on my return to better health went to do what Bdukes advised but the topic has now been closed :(, I cannot seem to get their attention even after doing a ‘special’ post asking for her help.
How do I get their help back again, or contact them or do what this other member did ‘flag’ as I cannot for the life of me see anything to help me and I want to resolve this problem with BDukes help since she kindly was helping initially.
Usually with members – like yourself – they usually point to a website they have created via of course WP but there is nothing for her :(
Can you help?

To flag any thread for staff you add “modlook” to the tags area to the right. See: https://en.support.wordpress.com/getting-help-in-the-forums/#how-do-i-get-a-moderatorstaff-reply-for-my-question
I see someone has already flagged this thread you created on Friday: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/help-needed-from-bdukes?replies=2#post-2446737 so you can just wait for a staff member to answer there.
Note that it may not be @Bdukes who answer, but whichever staff member is available. Generally it’s discouraged to ask for help from a specific person when you post in the forums as anyone should feel free to answer any thread they’re able to, and users asking (and in some cases even demanding) to speak only to specific volunteers or staff members can potentially ruin it for everyone. I understand you wanting to keep working with the same person who already knows your issue, but please keep that in mind in future :)

I can’t see that someone has flagged for a staff member….where do I see that?
I get that…it’s just that Bdukes was good enough to be patient with me while going through it so would just like to resolve it with her :-)

If you look to the right of any forum thread you’ll see an area marked “Tags”. On mobile screens it appears below the reply box. In that other thread you’ll see there’s a tag added called “modlook” added to the tags area. That means it has been tagged for staff already.

Ok…figured you couldn’t reply as it says closed and this box I am replying to you in is not available…just wasn’t sure about the tags bit.
Ok, thanks for all your help then kokkieh, much appreciated.
