Why can't I find my blog by typing in the .wordpress address into my browser?
-
Shouldn’t I be able to see my blog by typing in my .wordpress address into my browser’s search bar?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

If you type into the browser’s address bar, and you make sure to use the full address starting with http:// then it should work.
Here is your full address:
http://barkingthroughthefence.wordpress.com/If you are typing the blog name or blog address in and getting back search engine results, note that it takes time to get listed in those and if your site is brand new then it probably won’t be listed yet. Here are two related help links that go into more detail:

Thank you. I did not understand how the process works.
Is what I see when I bring my blog up using the http:// how it will look when it does get listed? Right now it looks about as interesting as a plain text document. There is no formatting, no color, no fonts, nothing. Just text. There must be a lot about this I don’t understand. -

It is! But you can change the theme or add images if you’d like.
When you look at themes, the example screenshots and demo sites use images to show you what your blog can look like, but those images are not included for you. You need to upload images separately, and you may need to configure the home page depending on what theme you choose.
I noticed that the http://barkingthroughthefence.wordpress.com/ blog is currently using the Twenty Twelve theme. Here is the help page for that theme in case you want to look at the instructions for setting up the front page demo: https://wordpress.com/themes/twentytwelve
If you’d like to look at other available themes, go to http://wordpress.com/themes/
If you’d like to preview how your content will look in a particular theme, go to the Appearance > Themes page in your dashboard and click the preview button on any of the thumbnail images: https://barkingthroughthefence.wordpress.com/wp-admin/themes.php

Thank you. I have looked around a bit and am starting to figure some things out. Your input has been helpful.

A week after I posted the original question I found it on my browser by typing in my blog address, but I still can’t see my blog. That doesn’t seem logical.

You should be able to see your blog at http://barkingthroughthefence.wordpress.com/
If you are searching in some other way and you see your blog listed in the search results, clicking on the link for it should work. It’s hard for me to tell what’s happening exactly though, since I cannot see what you are doing in your browser.
Are you using Google as your primary search engine setting in your browser?
If you want, you can list your exact steps and I can try to repeat them to see if I can see the same problem. Think that would help? For example, *exactly* what are you typing into the search bar, what comes up listed after that (cut and paste that), and what happens when you click on it?

I just type in my blog address, sans the http://, into my browser’s (Bing) search bar. The last time I did that the one thing that came back as a result was this conversation from our previous correspondence.
I can see my blog if I do like you wrote but at some point I thought I should be able to just do a (Bing) search for it, even if I have to do it by using the address – barkingthroughthefence.wordpress.com – instead of just the title. (I imagine one has to be a pretty prolific blogger to get that kind of attention from a search engine.)
And on that subject, I got a message that said the web address barkingthroughthefence.com is available for a price ($18/yr). Do you know what making that change from a blog to a web address would do for me? -
You don’t understand. Typing a URL into a search bar is different from typiing it into a browser bar. You’re not listed on searches yet because you don’t have enough material or enough of a track record. Blog more and wait up to seven weeks and you will show up in search engines.

You’re right, I did not understand. You have cleared things up for me. Thank you for that.

That is a custom domain name which is something you can purchase for a yearly fee. It let’s you change your blog address from barkingthroughthefence.wordpress.com (which is free) to barkingthroughthefence.com (which you’d pay for) so that you don’t have to have “wordpress” in your domain name. There are lots of reasons to buy a domain name. One of them is that some people think it’s more professional for a business. Another is that if you ever decide to leave WordPress.com, then you can point a custom domain name to a different web host and set up a different website with different plugins or themes. If you are happy with WordPress.com and not planning to leave, then you don’t need to buy a custom domain name if you are happy with the barkingthroughthefence.wordpress.com address.

You’re welcome. There’s a lot to learn about websites if you’re just getting started! You’re asking good questions. :)
