Why can't I get a sitename back?
-
Hey everybody,
I deleted a blog a while ago, and now I want the name back (i.e. the “xyz” of the address xyz.wordpress.com). I know WordPress doesn’t allow this, but I was wondering *why* this is the case? Other blog sites allow names to be re-registered. Can’t you be nice and release those lil’ site names into cyberspace?

What other blog sites do is irrelevant. There is no recycling of deleted blog URLS here at wordpress.com.

Or you can purchase a domain name via a domain mapping upgrade as in that case it will not matter what the underlying .wordpress.com address is.

I am well aware of the fact that WordPress doesn’t recycle URLs. If you read my original post more carefully, I’m asking why this is the case. Is there an advantage to not recycling them?

If you feel this is an important issue that you must have an answer to then I will flag this thread for Staff attention.

I think this is what you’re looking for…

Think about it: imagine you have a blog for a while but then decide to delete it for personal reasons. We then let someone else take over the name. A year later you get an angry phone call from a friend or relative who has clicked on an old bookmark, reads something offensive, and thinks that it was published by you. This is precisely why our policy is, and will remain, in place.

Yes, that’s the reason. I did not want to insult henryroberts by suggesting he did not read the information at the link I provided above. -
@feartheseeds That makes sense, and, to be honest, I hadn’t thought about it like that. Thanks for linking!
However, what about URLs that you originally coined yourself? The above logic surely doesn’t apply then. What would the harm be in retrieving old URLs you created in the past, but then subsequently deleted?
@timethief I hope you’re not misinterpreting the tone of this thread. This isn’t a criticism of WordPress’ policies, it’s just something I was pondering and I thought I’d ask the community.
