Why can't I map my domain name?
-
I have just set up a WordPres blog at beldotis.wordpress.com, and I wish to map this blog to the domain bel.is, which I have purchased via onlydomains.com.
I have changed the name servers at onlydomains but WordPress is still claiming that the domain has not been registered therefore cannot be mapped.
What can I do?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

According to WordPress.com staff in a related forum thread, they need to manually add some domain names with country extensions. That may be the case with your domain so I’ve tagged this for staff’s attention.

I have now received this notice from OnlyDomains:
This is to inform you that your delegation request for bel.is has been declined by the Registry in Iceland.
In order for your delegation to be successful your new DNS must meet the .IS Registry criteria.
Please kindly follow this link to validate your name servers comply with Icelandic regulations:
https://www.isnic.is/en/domain/req.php
Once you have validated that your new DNS meet the .IS criteria, please kindly place your delegation again by logging into your control panel.
Kind Regards,
OnlyDomains Limited

Hi there,
I’ve mapped the domain for you. You’ll still need to do a few things:
1) Purchase the subscription here by renewing:
https://wordpress.com/my-upgrades2) Point the domain to our name servers (it looks like you might have already):
ns1.wordpress.com
ns2.wordpress.com
ns3.wordpress.com3) After giving that a few hours to take effect, set the domain as primary under https://wordpress.com/my-domains
Let us know if you need more help!

Can you also mark stempel.edu.pl as registered domain. Whois knows it but wordpress not. I assume that wordpress has problems with edu.pl domains. I would like to spend many on wordpress but I can’t. My wordpress site is wgjlpw.wordpress.com

Hi Darnell,
Thank you for the reply. Unfortunately, and as per the email I posted, the Icelandic domain registry did not allow me to change the name servers to ns1.wordpress.com and so on.
Could you tell me what other .is users have done in the past?
Thank you

Hi there.
The best way to map a domain to a WordPress.com blog is to set your domain’s name servers to the following values:
NS1.WORDPRESS.COM
NS2.WORDPRESS.COM
NS3.WORDPRESS.COM
However, if your registrar requires that you create A records, please note that our IPs change over time. Because of this, your domain might stop working at some point in the future. If that happens, please get in touch with us to find out the most current IPs and then update your A records, accordingly.
If you still want to map your domain using A records, please be sure to create two records using these IP addresses:
192.0.78.25
192.0.78.24
Thanks!

Thanks Darnell,
I have just received the following email specifying how to go forward with this given the regulations surrounding .is domains. From what I can gather, they do seem to specify “A records” rather than the name servers you have provided:
***email below***
Please ask WordPress to provide you with an IP address or with your CNAME.
Then you will need to modify your domain zone records accordinglyThe instructions below will assist you with modifying your domain zone file on our DNS.
To perform DNS forwarding, this involves changing your zone file,(MX, A, CNAME records etc.) use the following steps:– Log in to your account
– Go to “My Domains”
– Click the domain name you wish to redirect
– By default you will be in the ‘Summary’ area of the domain info; select the ‘DNS Settings’ tab to go to this area
– Select the ‘Use Only Domains Name Servers’ option and click ‘Edit Zone Records’
– If the ‘Edit Zone Records’ option is not visible you will need to select the ‘Switch to these Name Servers’ option first (!! please be sure you want to switch to our name servers before doing so)
– Edit or Add records as necessaryADDITIONAL POINTS:
* The parent domain does not need to be explicitly referenced in the ‘Host’ field; records for the bare domain should use the ‘@’ host, for subdomain records only the subdomain should be entered (e.g. ‘www’)
* The ‘www’ and ‘@’ hosts have separate DNS entries, if you wish for your website to display at both these hosts you need to update both records (e.g. update the A record entries with the same IP address)
* The content of all CNAME and MX entries must be finished with a dot. e.g. CNAME – ghs.google.com.
* If a CNAME record is entered for any host, no other records should be present for that host – i.e. never add a CNAME for the ‘@’ host, always resolve this host via A record to an IP; ‘@’ host CNAMES will break your zone
* MX priorities must be greater than 0 and are relative, not absolute, with the lowest-numbered records being most preferred
* SPF records should be added as both ‘Type’ SPF and ‘Type’ TXT for reasons of backwards-compatibility
* SRV records have a particular format; all the data for the records is entered in the ‘Host’ and ‘Content’ areas but if you need details on exactly how please let us knowPLEASE ALLOW 24-48HRS FOR GLOBAL PROPAGATION BEFORE MAKING ANY FURTHER MODIFICATIONS

Yeah. some registrars don’t prefer to point nameservers over to us and we usually suggest the IP addresses as less than ideal alternative.
However, another (and better) option is to contact your current domain provider, and transfer the domain to a registrar — like Hover.com or GoDaddy.com — and then update your name servers: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/
