Why can't I map my subdomain?
-
When I try to map the subdomain on WordPress, it says: “Other subdomains of this domain are registered to another user at WordPress.com so you can’t use it for your site. Only that user can register other subdomains.”
The CNAME has been set up properly etc but WP just won’t allow me to do it. I have all permissions, what do I need to do?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

do you own the primary domain? Could you or another user have set up another subdomain already?
-
I don’t own it – it’s a university website’s domain.
It seems very obvious to me that another subdomain of the university’s domain must have been mapped to a WordPress blog previously.
Do you think this is the case? If so, will the uni web team be able to find out who the user was, and if that subdomain is no longer in use can the previous WP blog be ‘unmapped’ from the university subdomain?
I know I should be asking the uni web team this, but they are not being very helpful so I want to be armed with as much information as possible.

Please note the following:
If the domain is already mapped to a WordPress.com blog, you will need to contact the owner of that account for assistance in mapping a new subdomain. For security and privacy reasons, we do not give out user account information to third-parties.
If you are unable to determine the account that already is using the domain, you may need to come up with another domain.

Hi Doctor,
My apologies—we missed the university domain part of the post. Generally, you’d need to contact the user that already had mapped the domain. With university domains and other similar ones, we can assist a bit more.
I’m going to send you a note via e-mail to the address listed on your account so we can verify a bit of information before proceeding.
Thanks!
