Why can't I move/edit widgets?
-
On both my WordPress.com blogs, I cannot do anything with the widgets. I can’t move them, I can’t use the arrow on the right to edit them.
I’ve changed themes. I’ve cleared caches. I’ve used three browsers.
Help! I was able to change them near the beginning of November.

Yes, Javascript is enabled – in all three browsers – Firefox 8.0, Chrome 15.0.874.121 m and IE 8.

Are you running any third-party security software? If so, would you mind checking with that disabled?
-
Still no difference.
Interestingly, it works fine on my self-hosted wordpress…just not on the WordPress.com sites.
-
I’m not able to reproduce the issue myself under either browser.
Just to make sure we both aren’t going nuts, would you have access to another computer that you could try from, like a work computer, or a friend’s?
-
The issue of going nuts, at least in my case, precedes my issues with WordPress. :)
I tried the same thing on a different machine, different operating system (XP), diffferent security (tried with both AVG and no AVG), no addins with Chrome. Still no luck.
I do not have access from work. WordPress, like Microsoft, is blocked. (Twitter is not. Go figure)
-
Was the different machine on the same network as your other?
If so, it almost makes me wonder if this is a network issue. You might want to try resetting your router and modem.
-
If it were my router and modem, my self-hosted wordpress sites wouldn’t be able to work either, right? They’re working beautifully.
I thought it might be an outdated theme, but when I switched to 2011, it still didn’t work.
-
Your self-hosted sites are entirely separate from WordPress.com. They’ll probably never be affected with the same things.
Please let us know if reseting your router and modem fixed the problem.
-
No, restarting the modem and router didn’t help.
Interestingly, all of my built-in “collapse” buttons (grey box, with downward pointing triangle) like help, screen options, etc. don’t work…and they all call the php first when clicked, then look up various sites at gravatar.com. I couldn’t find anything where I would have turned on gravatar on the site…Could that be related?
-
I found the problem.
We are running OpenDNS (I have a tendency to forget about it because it runs out of sight). I had to specifically go in and whitelist gravatar.com. That took care of the problem.
So why should a block with an outside site whose main purpose is to supply pictures cause WordPress to not work properly?
-
Yeah, that doesn’t make much sense at all, but maybe it was preventing the Gravatar in the admin bar from loading, which caused everything else to freeze up.
Most of us run OpenDNS here, so I really doubt that was the core of the problem. You might want to make sure that you aren’t on the highest possible content filter setting.
