Why can't I rename my post categories?

  • Unknown's avatar

I don’t know why I can’t rename my post categories. All posts –> Categories —> Edit.
“Category not updated” is what I get.

Would like to change “The Arts” to “Arts,” “What Kids Say and Do” to “Kids.”

    Thank you.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

@Justjennifer, I wasn’t speaking of tags. I was speaking of post categories. The list on the right margin.

What I was trying to say is that you have a category with the same name as the tag you are trying to create. Sorry if that wasn’t clear.

Why can’t I rename my post categories? Would like to change “The Arts” to “Arts,” “What Kids Say and Do” to “Kids.”

You already have tags with these names:

Picking up on justjennifer’s point, knowing that search engines treat categories and tags in exactly the same way and will detect any duplication as spam is important.

The rule of thumb is to assign the least, not the most, combined number of only relevant categories and tags that accurately describe the post content.

Thank you for that extra tidbit of knowledge, tt. Duly noted.

THANK you, TT. Yep, I obviously was not aware of the duplic no-no and so did not understand. And I certainly never meant to spam. So is it possible for me to doctor my posts and categories at this point or will touching them in any way break search engine links or mess me up more? I had wanted to streamline and organize my categories to make them clearer for readers. Create “Family” and then nest “Marriage” and “Kids” under it. If you would peek at the current list, that’d be so helpful. In the first blogging days, I could not see what categories I would explore here. Time has clarified that.

Can I remove “art(s)” as a tag on some posts so I can rename the category THE ARTS to ARTS?

    Many thanks.

A high-profile professional blogger said in his book it’s best not to have too many categories – maybe no more than 8. That’s why I wanted to delete some and reorganize.

staff-ozmodiar, I wanted to confirm that yes, since I stopped getting email notification of WP followers (not readers who come from Tumblr or outside WP and subscribe by email) months back my WP follower count has been lagging. The gap between reported total and actual will widen throughout the day and it seems that when I chk in the morning it narrows back to a difference of 1. The closest the count has gotten these months is when it would fall short by 1. Thanks for chkg in with us.

    SORRY! Sorry! Bah, wrong page.

Thank you for keeping this topic open. I’m deep down under, this wk. I would like to touch base after taking up TT’s suggestions later this week.

  • Unknown's avatar

Will readers be able to access my reblogged post if only one of the categories assigned to it has been renamed? Thx.

  • Unknown's avatar

I give up! I have been through this with you on my blog and I give up!

  • Unknown's avatar

There is absolutely no functional difference between tags and categories on WP.com; the distinction is entirely arbitrary. You can rearrange and it will cost you a bit in terms of search engines, but over time you’ll make it back up.

Reblogging strips out categories, so it doesn’t matter to your reblogs if you rename categories.

@TT, I would hate to have irritated any blogger, esp one in Support, and I am sorry that’s where you are. All this is a foreign language to me, and I wasn’t asking you to repeat anything. I have read the info you shared. After I closed with the thanks on your blog, I realized I hadn’t heard back on the reblog ques so I popped on over in the hopes of clarifying that, as I had no more plans to rap on your blog – at least for a good while. I feel just about done with this topic for all the things I have learned. This was the residual question. I only hope you got my appreciation.

@Raincoaster, I did not know reblogging does that. Thanks! One final thought comes to mind, Raincoaster. If I take a post named under only one category which will be renamed, and before the renaming ADD a category to it, will the addition salvage the post in enabling it to still be viewable? THANK you.

I’m so sorry I could not explain things clearly to you. I truly tried to. :(

  • Unknown's avatar

    It will make no difference.

  • Unknown's avatar

@TT! No, I am surprised by your sorry. You were awesome. I feel bad I would frustrate anyone here (I LOVE my fellow bloggers). The residual questions were an attempt to visualize how a reblog post with broken links would behave. No one in my personal circle – but you guys – could teach me. I’m just the student who wants to get at the angles thoroughly. Let me give you a breather. Take care.

@RC, sorry to ask…so are you saying the category I add will not provide an alternate portal into that post (bc the original category with the broken link will show the error msg)? THANKS.

  • Unknown's avatar

Sure it will, but it doesn’t matter. It will not help the problem you introduce by changing the other category.

But really, it’s not such a big deal. Either make the changes and deal with the fallout for a few weeks or drop the idea.

    LOL
    OKAY!

    CIAO. =)

@TT, I just saw your blog response that there are no categories on reblogs. Thx again.
