Why can't I set my site to private
-
I don’t currently need my wordpress site and would like to deactivate it for the time being. The simplest way seems to set it to private?
For some reason that option does not show up for me. When I go to reading settings, I can only see
“Discourage search engines from indexing this site”.What’s the best way to get my site of the internets so that people can’t visit it anymore?

Below the “note” under the “Discourage search engines…” option you should find a third option: “I would like my site to be private, visible only to myself and users I choose.”

@macflyingdog,
If you are using the self hosted version of WordPress, you will not have the option to set your site private. This feature is not part of the self hosted version of WordPress. You will have to look for a plugin in the plugin directory here .However, if you are hosted on WordPress.com, you will have this option.
Please follow the instruction from here https://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/. -
If you are not sure if you are self hosted or not, please learn more about the differences between WordPress.com and WordPress.org here and identify it for yourself.
If you are self hosted, Please reach out for help in the WordPress.org support forums here. This forum is meant for WordPress.com users.

@macflyingdog, – if you post a link to the blog you need help with, someone can look at the link and tell you if you are hosted here or not
