Why can't I upload pictures to my blog?

  • Unknown's avatar

I am unable to upload pictures to my blog. From my dashboard, I am clicking “Add Media” and then “Upload Files.” I select the picture I want to upload, and then it just goes nowhere. I can’t insert the image into the post. I get no error messages. On the right side of the page (where all the pics I’ve previously uploaded appear), it appears that it freezes at the very beginning of the upload process. Asking for help.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

If you are not running one of the browsers and versions listed at http://browsehappy.com/ please try upgrading or switching first.

Note: If you are using an IE9 browser in compatibility mode that makes it render as IE7 and IE7 is not supported. To disable see > http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1196-internet-explorer-compatibility-view-turn-off.html

If you are running one of the browsers and versions listed at http://browsehappy.com please do these four things:

    1. Try clearing your browser’s cache: http://www.google.com/support/accounts/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=32050

    2. Make sure that you have third-party cookies and JavaScript enabled: http://en.support.wordpress.com/third-party-cookies/
    http://www.google.com/adsense/support/bin/answer.py?answer=12654

    3. Try with all browser extensions or add-ons temporarily disabled.

    4. Try enabling HTTPS: http://en.support.wordpress.com/https/

If it’s still happening, let us know exactly which browser (and version of it) you’re using by checking here if necessary http://www.whatbrowser.org/ and also post any error reports you get.

    timethief,

Thanks for coming back. I should have pointed out I am trying to upload a .png image, so that isn’t the problem. But I haven’t upgraded my IE browser.

  • Unknown's avatar

Pleas upgrade and disable compatibility mode.

  • Unknown's avatar

Oops. Scratch that. I am using IE-10. I received no error reports from your link: http://www.whatbrowser.org/

  • Unknown's avatar

Okay then we have reached the end of what I can help you with. I tagged this thread forStaff assistance. Please subscribe to it so you are notified when they respond.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Thanks for trying, timethief.

I went ahead and followed your advice to “disable the compatibility mode.” When I did so, I received an error message on my dashboard that I am using an outdated Internet Explorer. Only according to your whatbrowser.org I am using IE-10. Also, having clicked the compatibility view icon, I was not even able to GET to the point where I could try to upload a picture. When I click “Add Media” nothing happens. And when I double click it I get into “Insert Media” but can do nothing from there. No images appear and there is no dialogue box to upload any images.

Thanks for that updated information. I’m really sorry to hear you are going through this. Staff will respond as soon as they work their way forward from the support threads with earlier date stamps to this one.

Do you also encounter this issue in a different browser? for example Firefox or Google Chrome?

  • Unknown's avatar

I have found at different times problems with Chrome, Mozilla and IE. A friend gave up and went on to use Opera but I’ve read people have problems with that. While it may be very difficult and time-consuming to find the actual problem, it could be easy to uninstall the browsers you are using and reinstall the same one or other ones until you have one that works. There’s no harm in swapping around. Also disabling add-ons, etc. can help.

At one time, I have found Google Chrome was the only one that worked, another time Mozilla. Then I had problems with both, especially Mozilla which although it seems to work fine for some, I had so many problems with I won’t use that for anything now, and still use Chrome sometimes, but mostly IE which seems to work fine. I had to use it with add-ons disabled recently but it’s running really well at the mo.

It is important to use a maintenance program such as Slim Cleaner which is freeware or PC Utilities to make sure that your PC isn’t clogged up somewhere as that causes 95% of problems. Do you have a good freeware – again no need to pay – AV and firewall prog such as Adaware? Not being able to upload is quite possibly a sign of something wrong somewhere so just as well to work through it and get it sorted as that could avoid more problems down the line such as PC slowdown and hard disk failure.

    To all,

I NEVER had this problem until WordPress changed the way images were posted. I don’t view this as an “IE issue”; I view it as a WORDPRESS issue. If nothing else, I used to be able to use the html code to directly enter pics from my harddrive onto my blog. No more. Now I have to go into this “Insert Media” thingy and upload files to a gallery. And if I can’t upload files to that gallery, I can’t upload images to my blog. That change has NEVER worked as well for me.

I use CCleaner every single time before I shut down my computer and clean my IE cache/delete my browsing history literally every single time I get offline.

While I’ve used Firefox in the past, I have never installed any other browser on this computer – which has been my only browser for the last two years. That is actually one of the ways I have tried to “make sure that my PC isn’t clogged up somewhere.”

I can upload pictures by inserting them from a URL link; what I cannot do is upload my own dang pictures from my own dang computer onto the recently added WordPress Gallery.

It’s really not worth getting hot under the collar about. The problem may be nothing to do with WordPress.com and browsers do not actually have that much effect as long as you maintain them and the PC properly. Really a browser is just a piece of software and it is the things that get in it or what it is running on that causes the problems. Although having said that, I had a great deal of problems with Mozilla so I had to ditch it in the end and I was not alone in that. People whinge about IE but it’s fine. Google Chrome is good if you know how to maintain it has its own security issues but you can just go into settings and get rid of the bugs.

Toolbarcleaner.exe is an excellent piece of freeware.

I had a lot of trouble uploading media prior to the WordPress.com change, so that only Google Chrome would work and then not very well at all, so that it drove me up the wall. It’s far better now.

At times I have been running three browsers, one for one thing and one for another, it didn’t do any harm and it stopped me getting so annoyed as they all seem to have their idiosyncrasies.

I definitely would not use a product like CC cleaner every day, it is simply not necessary. It is not necessary either to delete your history.

I can highly recommend Tune Up Utilities which is not free it is not expensive either, and you can get a free 14 day fully functioning trial. Since I started using that, I have had minimal problems and it seems to pick up all sorts of malfunctions.

If do have many years experience with PCs as my first one was in the early eighties with a 500kb – that is half a megabyte – hard disk.

If I were you, I would install Advanced Uninstaller Pro which is freeware and run through the various things they have on there which are excellent.

I would simply uninstall ALL browsers and then re-install your preferred browser. If using IE update it to the latest version and if you have problems, swap to Google Chrome, or use both one for one thing and one for another as that has worked for me and I still use IE sometimes as it has proved good for downloading.

Perhaps then if you are still having problems it would be worth paying someone who is technically brilliant with computers to have look over your system. They may charge about £40 for an hour but usually work over an hour for no extra and are well worth it as you can ask them questions or for solutions for other problems, I write a list and get my money’s worth!

I can no longer upload images either, cleared cookies and cache, ran virus scan, updated PC etc but still no joy. This has only started happening the last few days as far as I’m aware.

It seems ubiquitous to Windows 7 users. Are you using Windows 7?

  • Unknown's avatar

    kardotim,

I am sending the screenshot to the email address you provided.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Raincoaster,

I am using Internet Explorer 10 for Windows 7. And it is set up to automatically install new upgrades.

But, yeah, I’m using Windows 7, all righty.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Aliceharding,

I may be wrong, but from my experience, you can’t really uninstall Internet Explorer. It came with the computer, and it is basically “there” for life.

My worst problems have occurred when I tried to uninstall something that didn’t fully uninstall. I literally had to purchase a new computer when I made the ultimate mistake of installing Windows Defender and then trying to uninstall it; it did NOT fully uninstall, but continued to run in the background in such a way that it prevented other security software from working. But it was “uninstalled” in such a manner that short of a computer expert I couldn’t access it. The only way I knew I had a problem was that my virus/security software crashed.

The problem is that it literally cost LESS to buy a new computer than it did to take it to a computer pro. But I’m not going to buy a new computer every time I’ve got a problem. Can’t afford it.

I’ll look into your suggestion that I get Tune Up Utilities.

You may be right as I have heard of the newer PCs have restrictions on them which mean eg you can’t change the operating system. I would be surprised though if you can’t uninstall and reinstall programs which is basically all a browser is. I have an older PC which doesn’t have that kind of restriction. I guess it could be like some of the cars they make these days, where you can’t even get out of them, never mind in them. Happened to friends of mine, one locked in his car, and another locked out of his car!

I can give you the name and number of a tried and tested qualified computer technician who will repair your computer remotely using Team Viewer (freeware), whether you are in the US or the UK makes no difference. He is very pleasant and helpful, has a degree in computer science, is trustworthy and knows what he is doing. Even for a major job that takes hours he only charges $50 and while he is fixing your PC you can ask him lots of questions if you want as you can have a conversation on the PC. Cool! Much better than having someone call round if you ask me and a lot cheaper.

Going out and buying a new computer is exactly what they want you to do. I developed my own theory which is that you can have a really old PC and if it’s set up right it is as fast as you need and that is what I have. I said that to another computer technician (other than above) and he said that he has a method of disking off all the documents, music, pictures, and vids and formatting his hard drive once a year which seems a bit drastic but he says it means he has an old system that is really fast because systems get bogged down with too much dross.

Wow I went to your blog as I wanted to email this to you direct (but no contact form) and was dumbfounded when the first thing I saw was “Sons of Issachar” as I never heard of that until today when I listened to a sermon but couldn’t seem to find it (wrong spelling) so I thought oh well I get the idea anyway. I didn’t expect to see it the same day especially when I wasn’t working on that kind of thing for the rest of the day. Amazing!
