Why can't I upload this as a .png?

I’ve uploaded several .png photos in an attempt to get my blog to display with more consistent quality on different computers and devices, and this is the first time this has happened.
I’ve tried several times to upload a particular photo as a .png, and WordPress keeps listing its file extension as a .jpg!
I know png files are bigger, but the photo is only 600 x 450 pixels and 180 KB so I don’t think the file size is the issue.
