Why can't use a domain that someone has deleted?

  I’m trying to register a domain wordpress.com but i can’t because the system says that the name already exists. I went to the domain and it said that:

  “…wordpress.com is no longer available.
  The authors have deleted this blog.”

  So, why can’t register a domain that’s no longer exists?
