WHY can't we delete our accounts?
-
I am very troubled to learn that I cannot delete my WordPress account. Why is this even a thing? I would really like for someone to just explain the reasons behind it. If there’s a good reason then I’d love to hear it, but otherwise, it makes me feel very powerless and I don’t like that. If this is truly MY account, then I should have the power to completely delete it, as I’ve already deleted my blogs.
So why can’t we? It seems like a popular request — lots of people ask how to delete their accounts completely.

Deleted blog URLs are not recycled here. Every username account that is registered has matching blog URL reserved for future use. No username accounts are ever deleted but there are steps you can take that result in leaving only a throwaway email address behind.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/deleting-accounts/ please note the following:
1. You can go to My Account->Edit Profile and remove all data except the account name and an email address. Create a throwaway email address and change the account email to that throwaway address. This only leaves the username behind.
2. To unsubscribe from email sent to you from WordPress.com, go here and click on “Block all subscription emails from WordPress.com”:
http://wordpress.com/#!/following/subsettings/3. To ensure the account is locked up tightly, visit this site, generate a password of 15-20 characters, and change the account password to it:
http://www.thebitmill.com/tools/password.html4. While you cannot completely delete your Gravatar profile, you can remove all of your profile information easily through the “Edit My Profile” page here:
http://en.gravatar.com/profiles/edit/?noclose#about-youYou can also hide your Gravatar profile from external access. Visit your profile page (click your name in the top navigation of the website), then click the “Hide My Profile” link in the bottom, right-hand corner.

Thank you, I’ve already removed information and I have yet to use a throwaway e-mail address, but you didn’t really answer my question: why?
What’s the reason behind it?
“Deleted blog URLs are not recycled here.” Why not? “Every username account that is registered has matching blog URL reserved for future use.” But I don’t want to use WordPress in the future. “No username accounts are ever deleted…” Why is that?
I know some people say, “Just remove your information, use a throwaway e-mail address, and it’ll be like the account was never there.” That’s not the same thing as it being gone. Deleting accounts seems like such a basic thing…I doubt it’s because it would be difficult to do, or something.

It protects you from me impersonating you all over the internet – if I got your old account name – yes they could add I guess a “clear all info” button – but then we would have people wanting their old name back so no way to make everyone happy –

Indeed auxclass called it. if accounts could be deleted they anyone could create a username account that you used to have and impersonate you and destroy your reputation all over the internet for example I could set up an mature content blogs registered under your old username.

Sorry about the typos. I’m not illiterate just visually challenged and I didn’t proofread prior to clicking submit.

I mean, I think the chances of that happening are incredibly slim…but whatever, looks like I’ll just stop using the account. No need for a throwaway e-mail address, it seems unnecessary. I do believe that someday, this feature will be added — I can see that I’m not the only person who’s asked about account deletion and it’s honestly my fault for not reading the fine print — but until that day, I’ll just wait patiently.
Feel free to close this thread.
