Why can't WP handle simple HTML?

I swear I spend half my blogging time trying to finagle HTML code that was standard in 1997. I’m sick of putting in utterly simple tags like <P> and <center>, seeing them resolve correctly in the editor, only to have them wiped out upon Saving or Publishing.

If you aren’t going to let us do CSS without paying extra fees, could you at least implement HTML correctly for simple formatting and cosmetic changes?

“Standard in 1997” can be deprecate or invalid in 2013.

    I was being hyperbolic.

By “standard in 1997,” what I really mean is “basic things everyone needs.” I appreciate your article, but WP should be able to provide clear GUI options and simple executions of things everyone probably wants: reliable paragraph and line spacing, object centering, formatting, and so on. Or how about this: actually implement on the page what I’m seeing in the editor?

I don’t want support for 15 year old HTML, I want WP to provide the options that make those simple formatting commands universal, no matter what platform you’re using.

Have you considered getting involved in the Open Source project?
