Why can’t you fully customise your page?

I just started this blog and can’t customise the theme to my liking. I’m decent with HTML but I’m wondering why WP doesn’t provide you with the capacity to edit layouts to your liking? All I want to do is change the colours of the background and text, maybe put up a banner at the top. That’s about it.

Is there any way of me being able to do this? I’ve seen all the free, available themes, and they don’t provide me with what I’m looking to do.

    Thanks in advance,

    D.

WordPress.COM is a multi-user platform which means we all share the same underlying wordpress and theme files. If one person were allowed to make a change to theme files, then it would change it for everyone using that theme.

Also, there are no HTML files. The HTML that the browser sees is created on the fly by PHP script files. Also to build a page, there isn’t just one PHP script file but many that deal with different sections of the same page. It all has to work in concert or things go b0rk very quickly. In other words, it is typically far beyond the capabilities of most bloggers.
