Why can't you get me started correctly?
-
I cannot log on to my site (www.common-scold.net) though I have successfully transferred it from Network Solutions to Bluehost and then (I thought) set it up in WordPress. I have tried a plethora of usernames and passwords and nothing works. Neither do my efforts to retrieve the correct usernames and password from you. I tried to reset my password, but your system won’t let me get through correctly.

You need to contact one of those hosts so YOU can get YOU set up correctly. WP is not involved in that part.

I did set it up with WordPress. Got a username, password, etc. Found a theme I sort of liked, put some copy into it. But now WordPress (not Network Solutions or Bluehost) will not recognize the login information. I’m sorry I didn’t make that sufficiently clear for you.

WordPress.com and WordPress.org are completely separate. You need to register a WordPress.org username account on the top right hand corner of this page. http://wordpress.org/support/ Then you will be able to log in there and post to the correct support forums for your software.

http://www.common-scold.net/ is a WordPress.ORG install – see below for more info and links

Auxclass: Well, that’s news to me. I read the somewhat confusing explanations of the two organizations and believed I was signed up with the correct one. In my case, “correct one” means I want some flexibility with the way my site will look (serif typeface for text, for example), but I have no interest in learning (or, more likely, trying to learn) CSS. I just want to mount a blog that I can add to from time to time and that looks halfway decent. That means some control over the banner at the top, placement of a side column, and–above all–the selection of a nice-looking typeface. Writing the thing is far more important to me than tacking on bells and whistles. If this is possible only through WordPress.org, would you please be kind enough to guide me through the proper procedure for moving what I have into wordpress.org (from, I *think*, WordPress.com)? Thank you.

Reply to auxclass’s most recent post: I did download (and print) the support article you refer to. I must not have studied it thoroughly enough. –Fred Powledge

This is what you need to know:

You do not have to move anything to WordPress.org, since you don’t have anything except this thread at WordPress.com.
From now on, ask your technical questions at WordPress.ORG since that is the support site for your particular kind of software.

Or they could domain map their existing domain name to a blog here and not need to learn about how to be a webmaster – there are limitations but with over 200 themes to choose from the look is not one of them – some other issues like you can’t run your own ads but it sounds like the OP just wants to write from time to time – so might not be so bad here

raincoaster, timethief, and auxclass: Thank you all for your help. I am abandoning everything I printed out and (thought I) had learned about wordpress.com and am trying to start over with wordpress.org. It’s too bad that there is no unifying document on the wordpress.* site that explains the whole process for someone like me. (I know, I know, that the information is probably there, but it’s accessible by a bunch of links that would put the Indian railway system to shame.)

It can be a bit confusing at times: http://wordpress.org/
They have a lot of documents over there – they also have a help forum with some great people that help – I also used “WordPress for Dummies” when I was getting started and found the book to be very helpful
