Why changing the domain name servers hasn't worked

  • Unknown's avatar

I have updated the domain name servers in my enom hosted stylleque.net account to point the domain to WordPress (was google blogspot). That was 72 hours ago and stylleque.net still shows the old blog and doesn’t seem to point to WordPress. I was expecting it to change so I can then go into WordPress and arrange to add this domain to my new wordpress blog. Is there something else I should have done to make this work?

    Help please.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Your nameservers are still pointed to:

    dns1.name-services.com
    dns2.name-services.com
    dns3.name-services.com
    dns4.name-services.com
    dns5.name-services.com

Per the guide at http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-existing-domain/ they need to be:

    NS1.WORDPRESS.COM
    NS2.WORDPRESS.COM
    NS3.WORDPRESS.COM

In this case, I recommend saving them again, or contacting eNom about the issue.

It looks like you are also using gmail and it is mapped to your domain name – above my pay-grade but you will probably need to make some changes to keep your email working – probably moving some MX records to here – but I am not completely sure as I don’t use gmail

Hi, thanks for the advice. Umm, macmanx, I tried entering the NS1,2,3 like you suggested but an error message said they need to be the actual ISP addresses. I have re-entered the ISPs I’d put in earlier for wordpress, ie 72.233.69.14, 76.74.159.137, 64.34.177.159 as in the wordpress instructions.

I’ll try and get some answers from enom.
    Thanks

  • Hm, it’s very odd that a registrar like eNom would require IP nameservers for a .net domain, but those are the correct ones.

Please let us know how it goes with eNom.

I have seen a few other cases in the forum where the registrar / email provider wanted to use the IP numbers – has to do with keeping the email on their servers working and I think their tech support people are not too bright since I was able to change the name servers and keep my email on my old host – seems I had to add an A & MX record –

  • Changing the nameservers to IP or domain would make no difference in this case, since you’re just changing the nameservers.

Once you change the nameservers, you’ve changed where the domain is pointing and where the DNS is controlled, so you would have set MX records and such over here anyway.

OK – I guess I stand corrected – seems that I saw people say their email provider wanted to do IP numbers to keep the email working – maybe they know less than I thought

When I moved I wanted to keep the email on my old host for a variety of reasons – so I ask him for a price and he sent me some records to change that did not work but one of your fellow Happiness Engineers helped with the format of the records and things took off and has been working fine for almost two years now – – in the end – my email works like I want it to so I am happy :)

  • You can direct an A Record to an IP address, which would allow you to keep the DNS records at the registrar, but we don’t support mapping via A Record.

This is what I added here – my email has been working so I hope you don’t tell me it won’t work anymore :)

I have a static IP from when I was hosted locally (literally down the street and around the corner)

    A mail 255.255.255.255
    MX 10 mail.my-domain.com.

    Thanks

  • No, that works fine. That’s what I meant, if you set nameservers at the registrar, you have to set your DNS records here, like you did. :)

    Sorry for the confusion!

That’s OK – but it did scare me for a moment – sort of like Wylie Coyote when he finds out he standing on thin air just before the drop

    thanks for straightening things out

Thanks for your advice, I’ve been able to map to WordPress okay now.
