Why circles?

    I’m mildly annoyed that the avatars used here and on gravitar are now circular. I know it doesn’t really matter but the tool for uploading and cropping is square. So you spend a little effort sizing and adjusting your image to fit the shape and save and then when you look at the results it’s all wrong because the avatar is now round and the image isn’t central in that format.
    Why is everyone going round and why can’t you have a template that allows you to crop the image to match how it’s going to be displayed?
