Why delete Tag Surfer?

  • Unknown's avatar

I found almost all the bloggers I’m following by scanning tags of interest to me and noticing their blogs that way.

Is there a problem you are fixing or did you decide there were negatives that forced you to become much less of a social network?

    Howdy,

You can still surf blogs by topic — in fact it just got better. :-)

Simply open the new reader, and click on the “Add a Topic” link in left-hand column.

You can open the reader by hovering your mouse over the WordPress logo in the toolbar, and clicking “Read Blogs”.

OK one of my problems was that I did not understand the utility of the ‘mark as read’ selection in Readomatic.

Experimenting with ‘Mark as read’ shows me I can still review topic content all the way down the list, so i don’t have to visit the site unless I want to mark as ‘like’ or ‘follow,’ and etc.

That’s the Tag Surfer capability I thought I lost.

So it’s not bad after all, thank you! :)

  • Readomattic will also be discontinued shortly.

As mentioned above, http://wordpress.com/#!/read/ is the new reader and combines the functionality of both.

Tag (topic) choices are listed down the sidebar to the left, and you can add more via the “Add a Topic” link at the bottom of the list.

OK as far as I am aware, the new feature you refer to only allows one topic at a time to be viewed (except in the case of blogs I am already following). This means that a user with interests in a number of very specific subtopics (which were conveniently aggregated in Readomatic and Tag Surfer) will be inconvenienced and forced to give up lots of time to review all possible tags (= no longer useful).

That aggregator function was the key benefit of the old features and should have been designed into the ‘improvement’ – in my view.

Hope it’s not true. Please tell me I’m still missing something here and I am not going to be inconvenienced by this design decision.

  • That’s pretty much the way it’s intended to work, but are looking into expanding the functionality.

Thank you, I will be very happy to find it expanded.

    Hi macmanx

Readomatic is now gone and the new Blog Reader is still lacking the ability to aggregate my tags. How hard could that be if it is able to aggregate my ‘likes’?

I already miss the old ways. I can’t believe I’m the only member who likes to see 20 or so tags in one search. Looking for them one at a time is too time-consuming, so the platform just got less useful for me.

Keep trying to expand if possible, thanks.

  • To be honest, it hasn’t been a very popular feature, at all, but we are working on implementing similar functionality. Unfortunately, it’s not as easy as simply flipping a switch.
