Why did all of my Facebook shares disappear?

The number of Facebook shares on every blog post have returned to 0. Some posts had thousands and hundreds of Facebook shares.

How can this issue be resolved and the Facebook share count return to its original number for each post?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi,

The only reason I can think of is the recent move to HTTPS for all WordPress.com sites. You can read more about it here:
    https://en.blog.wordpress.com/2016/04/08/https-everywhere-encryption-for-all-wordpress-com-sites/

Since the URL of your site changed after the move, it might have fooled Facebook into thinking your posts haven’t been shared at all. I personally wouldn’t worry too much about it, the move to HTTPS is really important, and the stats will build up again over time.

Did you remove the Publicize app?

Yeah, that must be what it is. A new URL will cause the Facebook share numbers to return to 0 so changing the HTTP prefix to HTTPS must have done it.

I’m still connected to the Publicize app, so hopefully this doesn’t affect all of my new blog posts going forward.

I’m going to ask Staff to weigh in on this, before we get a flood of threads like this one.

    Hi there!

We have recently enabled SSL on all our sites (previously it was only available with the default wordpress.com URLs). This is a good thing for security, but it looks like the Facebook data needs refreshing for your Facebook shares to show.

This should happen automatically within 30 days. Since we can’t automatically speed up the Facebook refresh, another option is that you can enter your post URLs manually here:
    https://developers.facebook.com/tools/debug/

If you paste the links to your posts and then click Debug, then click Fetch New Scrape information it should refresh the share counts data and will show on your site again.

Bookmarked! It may be good idea if Staff publish on this because I predict that we will have thread after thread posted on this.

Wow, thank you for the quick response!

I’ll reply back here if I happen to experience any other issues with my Facebook sharing numbers after 30 days.

    Thanks again!

And Facebook’s manual debugger tool worked on one URL I just tried so thanks for that tip as well!

Is there a similar debugger for twitter? I know my content is being shared fairly widely on facebook, but no shares are registering on the blog page

Twitter’s API no longer allows share counts to be shown on its Tweet button. This is a change from Twitter’s end, and there is nothing WordPress can do about it. More info here: https://blog.twitter.com/2015/hard-decisions-for-a-sustainable-platform

Following up on this thread as I have not seen the Facebook data automatically refresh on my WordPress website after more than 30 days now. Currently all posts published are still displaying “0” Facebook shares unless I manually debug them using the tool that was provided above.

Has there been any update on the automatic refresh?

No updates yet, but we are working on a solution. Given that you have quite a substantial amount of content on your site, manually debugging the URLs one by one is probably not an option. However, if you do not want to wait, you can debug your URLs in batches (50 at a time) here: https://developers.facebook.com/tools/debug/sharing/?q
