Why did Edit just loose a link's hover comment?

  • Unknown's avatar

OLD: Add a comment to a link to display when reader hovers mouse over it. Just click the link button and type in the hover message.

NEW: Link button lost the message entry field sometime over the last week! Why? Is this a way to make good, reliable (old) editor unusable and force us into the restrictive and limited new one?

Why the loss in our capability? Why delete useful properties?

Yes, I have just discovered this problem too. No longer an input field for links hover comment.

New links now give me a ‘Link text’ field – but this just contains the same text as highlighted link in the post – not very useful.

Odd thing is, I pasted in some links from another site, and when I edit these the editor does not show the ‘Link text’ field, just the URL field. What is triggering the different response?

I would like the old functionality back ASAP – I use hover links all the time for academic references – having to manually edit links in text mode will be very time consuming.

This is a backward step! PLEASE TAKE NOTE WORDPRESS!

  • Unknown's avatar

Previous functionality for creating posts altogether was better than this new way of doing things.
Reliability or ‘change just for change sake.’ The older interface was more efficient. Why is WP seemingly, continually on a quest to ‘fix something even if it’s not broken?’
No hover links seem to be the latest functionality eliminated which once again brings us to yet, another step backward on WP.
While going in to text, and changing appropriate text for hover, the same text is duplicated in blog content as the link.

  • Unknown's avatar

To make a hover references work now, you now need to go into the text editor and manually add the hover text using title=”hovertext”, for example:

    [ref]

It takes ages, especially in a long article with multiple references! :-(

Please restore the original functionality WordPress!

  • Unknown's avatar

oops meant to past that link as code:

    `[ref]

  • Unknown's avatar

    Aagh failed again :-(

    Give up.

Code used on my page, today. In this post “cubs Home Page’ was the actual text for the post. The hover message: Nationals 7 Cubs 5 Friday 6-05/2015 at Washington.

All of this done…so much simpler in visual before change.

    Blog link: https://chicagocubsmlb.wordpress.com/2015/06/06/wada-liquidated-in-fourth/

    Cubs Home Page</span>.

Trying to post extended code…hope this succeeds.
Refer to my prior post. This refers to ‘Cubs Home Page’ as posted text, and a separate hover quote over link

There’s a box, and more details of Friday’s Nationals-Cubs contest on the

    Cubs Home Page</span>.</h3>

Sorry – Couldn’t get entire code to post???????

  • Unknown's avatar

    @afifahhamilton and @ contacting davel

Maybe try the “quote” button to enter the text? or the “code” button.

These comments are not overly convenient, but I really would like to see how one can enter the html in text mode. You probably already tried these!

WHAT is WP people doing? trying to through out sophisticated blogs for simple ones? feels like they are trying to dumb us down… (no, can’t be that paranoid!)

  • Unknown's avatar

Too upset to spell! through should be <e,>throw<em>.

I would bet the buttons don’t work. Nor any of the suggestions to left of the comment entry box.

    Thank you WP programmers

  • Unknown's avatar

Okay, give up on the forums page. Will try to post the code I used at https://chicagocubsmlb.wordpress.com asap

  • Unknown's avatar

Well, something changed. Now, when I click to make a link in the flowing prose, A “Link Text ” box pops up, but it is the quoted text, not a different string the way it was before today (?).

So it shows up but is not repaired

  • Unknown's avatar

I have posted an html code model for a hover link as they were before identical trace on text.

    https://chicagocubsmlb.wordpress.com/hover-links-and-other-special-codes/

  • Unknown's avatar

So the answer it to put the hover message in the title= .

@contactingdavel, you have been real teacher for me.
Thanks. I am html literate but not a black belt – this was a big help. Using it will be a real pain for lots of references, though!

Certainly wish WP would reinstate the original editor. Why change the classic editor now that they have the new one to play with? Unless, of course, to discourage us all. Are they trying to have us migrate to a different blog platform? (I shudder)

  • Unknown's avatar

@Lasttechage Thank you for your kind words,

I certainly haven’t earned a black belt in html. I’m fumbling my way through but, it’s nice when we can help each other!

And yes, the older platform interface was much easier to navigate. I agree with you on that one.

  • Unknown's avatar

@lasttechage Just occurred to me, and I haven’t tried it yet. I’ll try to get to it later to see if it works. Just wondering whether within the title, you could use the properties of a ‘ul’ listing each entry with ‘li’ closing tag on ea. entry /li, and finally closing the ‘/ul’ Have to check it but, then close with /title. Don’t know…..thinking out loud….

  • Unknown's avatar

@contactingdavel interesting thought. I know that style=” … will work in <strong style=” <em style=” and <p etc you end it with the standard </ type of ending. I am afraid to complete the code here, because I think this editor will think I am giving it html commands.

I think that most likely this will not work with <li etc. because it is not ever included in the interior command string containing title=”text” .

But in your string, you probably don’t need the <a style etc. these things ought to work with the <strong part.

    Am interested in your results
