Why did my autosave fail?

  I lost a post I spent 45 minutes writing today. I was about to publish it, but hit save instead. Then I hit preview. When I clicked over to the preview tab (I have it preview in a separate tab) my post looked the way it did at 7 a.m. when I started writing.

  I tried to recover the previous 45 minutes of work, but when I checked the autosave log, there was a version at 7 a.m., then another at 7:45 a.m. This is supposed to autosave every 2 minutes, right? Well, what happened? And can you recover my missing content?

  You are correct about the post being autosaved every two minutes, but there is only one autosave for each post or page. Each new autosave overwrites the previous autosave in the database.

  The latest autosave can be found in your post revisions module.

  HI Matt,

  I’m talking about a specific post. And there is no record of it autosaving between 7 and 7:45 a.m. So where did my content go? And why?

  Can you tell us what the title of the post in question is, or if it was published, can you share the link with us?

  Didn’t publish it yet. Was all finished, all set to publish, and simply saved before previewing prior to publishing it. Still in draft form. Don’t know if giving you the title will help. If so — let me know — and I will.

  When editing the draft, scroll down and toward the bottom you’ll see five revisions.

  It’s possible that one of those may be the auto-save.

  Nope. Checked that immediately after the glitch. What those are are all earlier versions of the post.

  I started editing the post today at 6:59. The 7 a.m. and 7:45 a.m. versions of the post are the same. And I wrote a whole post in between, with no record of any saves.

  What happened?

  The problem, in case I’m not explaining it clearly, is that after I hit save at 7:45, when the screen refreshed the post was the same as it had been 45 minutes before, when I first started editing.

  So, I lost all that I had written in the intervening 45 minutes.

  Unfortunately, there’s literally no evidence of an auto-save, so I’m not really sure where it went. :(

  Well, now I know where I’ll be looking every time I write a post from now on. And I’ll copy all the text before saving, just in case…!
