Why did my Facebook share button turn into a "Share" button?

The Facebook share button used to show up with “Like” and now it reads “Share”. How can I get it read “Like” again?

    My blog is at http://aquanhaphoto.com

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there. I don’t see any sharing buttons on your site, so I’m just guessing here, but you probably changed your button style under Settings ->Sharing in the dashboard. The Like button will only show if you have the Official Buttons selected. Any other button style will show a share button instead. https://en.support.wordpress.com/sharing/#customize-your-services

Thanks for the response. But I did select the Official button style and it shows up as Share. I selected the other styles and but none of them show up as a Like button.

    Any other possible reason?

  • I just checked on my own blog, and it looks like the official Facebook button is now a share button where it was always a like button in the past. This tells me it’s most likely a change on WordPress’s side.

I’ll tag this for staff so they can give us clarity on this and whether it still is possible to have a like button. Please be patient while waiting for their response.

    Hi there!

The official Facebook sharing button is now a “Share” button instead of a “Like” button. We made the change to use the correct, official Facebook sharing button for the Facebook “share” action that you do when you click the button on your site. :)

    Thanks for confirming that.

Is there any way to add a like button under additional services, the way one could add a share button when the official button was a like button, as explained here: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/its-possible-facebook-share-and-like-buttons-at-the-same-time-update?replies=5 ?

I’m just wondering, as I know many users prefer the like button. I had a look at Facebook’s developer page to see if there was a link one could use for such a button, but everything I saw there requires JavaScript.

Also, while looking around there, I saw that the Facebook Like Box for pages is being discontinued later this year, which will probably affect the widget we have here. The developers might already be aware of this, but I thought I’d mention it, just in case: https://developers.facebook.com/docs/plugins/like-box-for-pages

I’m not aware of any workarounds like that to use both buttons. The sharing buttons are meant for sharing content, so this change brings the Facebook sharing button more in line with other sharing buttons and the sharing action on Facebook.

Thanks for pointing out the news about the Facebook Like Box! I’ll pass that along to our developers to make sure they’re aware of it, in case they weren’t already. I really appreciate it. :)

  • The sharing buttons are meant for sharing content,

Understood. I just thought I’d ask in case the question comes up in other threads.

    And you’re welcome :)

    Hello,
Having changed the Facebook like option with the share button is indeed a major disadvantage for many bloggers and I, for one, am truly disappointed in not having the possibility to choose whether to add one or another for each blog post.
Not all readers willing to like a post are also willing to share it on their wall, hence loosing Facebook likes for this reason is a big inconvenient.
I would very much appreciate having the liberty of choosing the type of button function that I can add to my blog posts.

    Thank you!
