Why did my site start to load slowly?
-
Hi, I recently redirected my blog to adinaohana.com and now it loads really slowly and some people have reported that it crashed. I am working on re sizing all of my photos right now – so far I did the most recent few blogs. It is still loading extremely slowly. Is there anything else I can do?

Hi there,
The reason your site is loading so slowly is because of the number of very large images you are embedding in each of your posts. ON your front page, I see 10 posts, each with a large number of 1024×768 pictures, each taking a while to load, especially if your readers have a slow internet connection.
Here are a few ways to make it faster:
* if you want to keep having such large images in your posts, I would recommend showing less posts at once on your front page. You can limit the number of posts shown by default in your site’s Reading Settings (see “Blog pages show at most”).
* you could also use image galleries in your posts instead, which would have the advantage of loading smaller images at first, then let your users click on them to see the full size version in a neat format.
* use smaller images in your posts.Hoping this might help.

Also, there is no point in setting the size of your images to anything wider than 550px, since that is the maximum width it has available to display images. All it does is embed the very large picture, but still only shows it at a maximum width allowed by your theme, therefore making your page very slow.

Thank you so much. I am in the process of editing all photo widths to 550px.
Will this pose a problem if I change the theme?
-
It shouldn’t, unless you manage to find one narrower than 550px, but those should be long gone.

Ok, great, thanks!
I hope this works! I changed the posts per page to 5 but I really prefer 10…
-
Also, I’m wondering why it would load really fast before? It only started loading slowly when I used my own domain name. What can I do about that?
-
There could be an additional one or two seconds as the domain is directed back to your blog.
About how much slower is it now?
-
it’s definitely better! you can try and let me know if you have other suggestions – thanks!

Note: we’ve also tracked down a bug related to the theme you are using that made this much worse than it should have been.
You will soon not have to resize your images down in the first place, as the code will automatically do this based on the context the images are displayed in. The images will automatically be resized down to the maximum width your theme allows, and will still be available as full size (however big) when a user clicks on one to see it full size. :)
I’ll let you know when the code is in place.

Fix is in place. See how fast a page such as http://adinaohana.com/2011/10/ loads now, despite you not having resized the images down.
Happy [photo/fashion] blogging. :)
