Why did my the cubic theme randomly add feature images without my approval?

I am applying for jobs right now and I’m using wordpress to show my portfolio. I chose the cubic theme and spent weeks adding content and perfecting the layouts. I have a lot of images so I chose not use feature images in 5 out of the 6 posts that appear on my home page and just have the theme color blocks. Today I signed in to add content and found that the wordpress theme had added RANDOM images as the feature images on my home page. I’M FREAKING OUT. I’ve checked the site every day except for today and I sent out multiple applications yesterday so there is no doubt the horrible layout was seen by potential jobs. And some of the images set don’t even appear on the site (for good reason)! I tried fixing it but when I go to edit the posts in my dashboard, there is no featured image saved at all even though these images are showing up. Right now I’ve just set them to a white jpg but I don’t like what it looks like. This is a glitch that couldn’t have come at a worse time. Please help!!!

In other words, the theme seems to be choosing a default feature image from my media library. I’ve been using this theme for a few weeks and it has never done this before. How do I get it to stop choosing default feature images and go back to having a default color?

    Hi there,

I’m sorry about the sudden change. Our theme team released this change today. The change was that posts without featured image (but with an image attached to the post) display that image in the grid on the blog page.

If you are unhappy with the image you can add a featured image to that post so that you can choose the image that you want.

Let me know if you have any questions/feedback with this.

Thank you for the reply. Unfortunately, I would prefer the option to not have a feature image at all. I like the functionality of getting straight into the content inside the post directly under the title instead of scrolling past the featured image first. Is that an option? I’ve chosen the Boardwalk theme as a temporary solution but I know Cubic is a child theme of Boardwalk. Should I assume the Boardwalk theme will make the same change?

    Hi there,

Thanks for the feedback! I reported this to our theme team and asked them if they were going to make the change for Boardwalk as well. From my understanding that was the plan, but they wanted feedback from users before this change was made.

I’ll let you know what they say once I hear back.

    Thank you,

Yes please let me know. All of my content is currently formatted to best display with these themes so an unforeseen update is pretty dramatic for me.

For sure! It has been reported. I will get back to you as soon as possible!

    Hi there!

So I have some amazing news! Our wonderful theme theme created an opt-out as seen here:

    Screen Shot

We’ve already checked off the box for you so you should not see any change on your site. If you want you can switch back to the Cubic theme – just make sure that box is checked. Boardwalk and Cubic work the same way now.

    Cheers!
