Why did the dashboard background change to black and is there a way to fix this?

Why did the dashboard background change to black and is there a way to fix this without having to spend more money? I did not change any settings and simply found it this way today. It’s very hard on my eyes – so much so, that I’m abandoning plans to write a post. I saw other discussions around this, but didn’t see mention of when/why the background changed and it wasn’t clear if purchasing another product was the only option. I would hope WP wants to keep the site user-friendly and the black background is quite the opposite. And I don’t have money for (or interest in) purchasing another feature at this time. Help?

I took a look and everything is working properly.
Can you please try clearing out your browser cache?

I cleared my browser cache and the dashboard still has a black background and it’s *still* hard to read. I haven’t wanted to try to use the site to write any posts since the change…

I see your issue now. You can disable the “Enable experimental responsive admin design (MP6)” option at:

I checked the user settings. The MP6 option wasn’t checked. I tried changing it and even cleared cache & cookies in between. Still no change.
Maybe I’m not describing the problem correctly. Maybe it’s not the “dashboard” that has the black background that’s so hard to read. It’s the menu lists/options on the left and the drop-down menus that pop-up when you scroll over certain choices, such as Store, Posts, Media, Links, etc. These sections did not used to have a black background with white font. The bold-font menu choices are okay to read. The drop-down/pop-up menus are horrible to read with their faded-white-looking font, especially on the laptop I use at home (which is the only way I can work on my blog).
Is there some way to change this back to the way it was before? It seems like it used to be either the turquoisey-blue, as on this screen, or white and gray or something. It’s been so long, I don’t remember. I only know the black is hard on my eyes and takes the joy out of working on my blog. :-(

I see. This is the new dashboard design. You can read more about it at http://en.blog.wordpress.com/2013/06/17/beautiful-makeover/
Do you also encounter this issue in a different browser? for example Internet Explorer or Google Chrome? Otherwise please send us a screenshot of the page where you’re seeing this? You can upload the screenshot to your blog’s media library.
