Why did the featured image for a post replace the header of my blog?

  • Unknown's avatar

In a previous post I set a featured image for the post only, following your instructions. I did this after the post had been published and it worked fine. Today when I tried to set a featured image for my post (not replace the header), not only was the feature image set for the post, but my header was replaced, even though when I went to the dashboard and checked and it showed the old header photo. When I went to the post to preview, however, the header photo was replaced. I deleted and tried again to preview and it was the same problem. In the end, I published the post and then afterward when into the header and replaced it with what I wanted. Could there be a glitch in your new system?

    Hi there!

Can you point me to the post where this happened? Chateau has a feature built in that changes the header image out for the featured image on a post if the featured image is large enough (960 x 260). You can read about that feature briefly here (under “Custom Headers”):

I believe that’s what likely happened, but I would like to see the post just to be sure!

Thank you Jeremey. That does sound possible. Here is the link to the post where the problem occurred: https://ardysez.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post.php?post=3101&action=edit

So if I understand you correctly, I need to make my featured image for a post, under 960 on the longest side? Just so you are not confused when you look at the post, I decided to change out the header image with a cropped version of the featured image after the problem occurred, as I liked it better than the old one I had. I would not have minded the featured image changing the header except that it gave me no opportunity to crop it sensibly and it looked silly. So when I reset the header image I could crop it to better advantage.

While we are on the subject of size of photos, should I be downsizing all of my photos before uploading to WP library, or should I do it after, or is it at all necessary? When I use a thumbnail or medium sized print, WP automatically resizes them, doesn’t it? Thank you.

    Hi there,

Please see my answers inline below!

Yep! If the featured image is larger than 960×260, it will replace your header image. If you don’t want this to happen, just make sure the featured image is a little smaller than that!

While we are on the subject of size of photos, should I be downsizing all of my photos before uploading to WP library, or should I do it after, or is it at all necessary? When I use a thumbnail or medium sized print, WP automatically resizes them, doesn’t it?

In general, it isn’t necessary to downsize all of your photos unless you’re trying to save room (users get 3GB of storage by default). When you use a thumbnail or medium sized print, we automatically size it down within the post.

If you have a featured image uploaded that you want to use but it’s a bit too big, I would recommend sizing it down within WordPress.com. You can read more about that here:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/images/image-editing/#resizing

That will save you the hassle of doing it in another program prior to uploading!

Thank you Jeremy. I have read the Chateau link and have implemented the size change on my most recent post and it has worked perfectly. Many thanks for all the good info.
