Why did the “verse” block type in the Nucleare theme switch to Courier font?
-
I use the Nucleare theme, and I just noticed that all “verse” blocks have switched to the Courier font, which I hate. Does anyone know why that happened?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Here’s an example:
Gibeon Versus Jerusalem: A Biblical Game of Thrones?
All the blocks with a gray background are the verse blocks, and they used the same text font until yesterday.

Hey there, I want to say verse blocks are traditionally a monospace font like Courier. My records are showing this font is coming from Nuclear itself, and that the style was last updated in 2018.
We can do a little more digging though. Would you know what font you used before, and do you remember when you last saw it there?
Also, you may want to consider using the pullquote block instead. You can give it a border or background color of your choice, change the font size, etc.
-
That’s so strange. Something must have changed, because it was never Courier on any of my devices previously.
Generally, I use pull-quotes for quotes from academic sources and verse blocks to quote ancient texts. I guess I can’t make that distinction any more. The classic editor gave me the option of simple indented paragraphs (blockquotes) without other decoration, but the new editor doesn’t seem to have that option.

There is a block quote option too:
This is how it appears in the forum.
Citation hereIt’s a little different to the pullquote:

Would having these two options be useful for you?
Should you wish to indent a regular paragraph, you could also do that by placing it within a group block:

Sorry, I was confused. I use the regular quote for quoting modern authors/works. The pull quote formatting is too weird in Nucleare to be of any use in running text.

I didn’t know about group blocks. Maybe I’ll give that a try.
It’s worth testing as they do have a little flexibility in terms of padding/margin which helps indent them:
https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/group-block/#dimensionsAnother alternative if your text is typically black on a white background, could simply be to apply a white background colour to the paragraph in question. This usually has a similar effect of indenting the text a bit, without needing to put the paragraph into a group block. Since the background colour setting even allows for opacity, you can also set it to be white, but completely transparent – this retains the padding/indentation, but would not show the actual background colour were you to ever change the colour scheme of your blog as a whole.
You can see the effect of the background colour in action in the linked section of the paragraph block guide:

Okay but I also feel gaslit by my site design in Nucleare! I swear it was not courier new before. Really ugly, and now how I like to treat my poetry publications as a poetry journal.

Using groups doesn’t give me any padding, unfortunately. The only solution I’ve found is to choose a classic block and then edit the html manually. This is very finicky to do and easy to mess up.

Here’s the response I received from support:
After checking your site, I noticed you are using a third-party theme
Nucleare. I checked other Classic Themes, but I couldn’t reproduce this issue on other themes, which confirms the issue not from the Gutenberg block but due to how the theme is applying fonts to that block. I can also see it on the code here: https://d.pr/i/HcXw6s -
FWIW: MANY of the themes show the same bug with courier new. I have been trying out a number of them.

Hey @paulmdavidson , thanks for the screenshot. That’s helpful. The theme itself didn’t change, so I wonder if the general formatting for Verse blocks did. We’ll do some digging.
@hmvanderhart this one won’t count as a third-party theme since we have offered it in our showcase, likely with our own version of the theme. Our code for that theme has not changed of late, so this must be due to some other change that we’ll need to suss out.

Thank you for looking into this! As a poetry editor I am dismayed that verse blocks are either Courier-style or an italicized sans-serif font across all the themes now.
