Why did widget disappear while moving it from the sidebar to inactive storage?

Today, as I dragged a widget from the sidebar to the inactive widgets corral, I must have accidentally let go of the mouse button too soon. The widget disappeared and I could find it nowhere. In similar circumstances in the past I’ve noticed that the widget would return to where it was dragged from. That didn’t happen. And it did not appear anywhere in the widgets, active or inactive, on the left side of the page. I suppose it could be hiding in one of them, but how am I supposed to find it. Is it retrievable?

By the way, this has happened a few times recently. I’ve had to reconstruct the lost widget each time.
