Why did WordPress remove precise image dimensions from the visual editor?

Having the image dimensions available in the visual editor was very useful. Without them it will be considerably more difficult to place images side by side, since they will not remain on the same line if the combined width exceeds the limit for the theme used. Also, it will be much more difficult to set multiple images placed throughout a longish post or page at approximately the same size with the visual editor. I suppose they’ll remove the corner drag size-modifying tool next.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I am having problems with some of this too.
    1. If one chooses full size and the image is very large, then the tool for activating the edit box, which is now on the upper right corner, is out of view and it means scrolling to find the edit tool before I can open the image and resize it, though resizing is without precision as you note.
    2. There used to be the ability to enter a photo ‘tool tip’ or whatever it is called which, when one hovered over the image, gave some information. That no longer seems to exist and was a tool I found very useful as I don’t like to use captions.
I am hoping that these things can be fixed – 1 is an easy fix, move the tools to their former locations, and 2 must be as well. As to precise dimensions, who knows. I suspect all of this is aimed at the mobile users who don’t (and in fact can’t if they don’t have the tools) put a lot of thought into the design of their blogs.

a lot of people hate it how it is now, and wordpress isn’t even replying or giving an explanation about this thing.

What a great “update” this one was, eh?
I used the advanced option to tweak the border on my images and change sizes to optimize the way they displayed.
How do I get rid of that blue border that automatically displays in my theme? Sorry, I can’t be positive about this change.

“I used the advanced option to tweak the border on my images and change sizes to optimize the way they displayed.”

Me, too. Removing this option presents a major problem for me.

This is the silliest thing they’ve done in a while. It will take at least ten times longer to make simple edits on busy post in which we’ll now have to go hunting for the width and length. The dimensions used to be in two places in the visual editor: in tooltips, and in the image editor. Tweaking and easy editing have been abolished. Now, any time you want to make the slightest tweak you have to switch back and forth between visual and text, and repeatedly hunt for the dimensions in text.

Lordy. I am glad I’ve been offline, because I cannot possibly walk people through a change that makes this little sense.

I’ve also noticed the using the corner dragging option to modify the dimensions, which has worked like a charm for the last four years (at least), suddenly now will sometimes cause the image to disappear…and sometimes cause the image to become frozen as a double image which you can’t edit at all until you update the page, revert to one of the old revisions.

  • Unknown's avatar

I meant “or revert to an old revision.”

  • Unknown's avatar

I agree entirely. This is an appalling upgrade. I suspect arrogance and stubbornness will prevent them rethinking the issue!

I set up a friend’s site on here… I felt the advanced image editor was limited before you removed 90% of the functionality.

I figure you made the change to streamline the number of variables you’re tracking in your code. Thus making it easier to handle a greater number of users at the expense of capabilities.

    Well, that’s fine. Whatever…

I did ,further, unhappily notice that once I’d changed the CSS code on the page, it disappeared/reverted when I opened and closed the editor for the image again…

I have a hard time accepting the spin that this is an improvement from a users POV, while I can understand that you might have pursued this to optimize your server processes to handle more users…

…all the best with it. I’d prefer more editing options rather than fewer. Cheers. ~M

That is an interesting technical point and I am sure that you are right. It isn’t an improvement – it is a reduction in functionality. How far will WP go in dumbing down the whole blogging experience in their support of tablet rather than PC users?

  • Unknown's avatar

Dumb. You got that right, apetcher. I can’t wait until the editor buttons are lined up in a column 3 feet long like the widgets on the ever-expanding rectangles in the widget page. But a three year old can figure it out! True, but every four year old is bored.

  • Unknown's avatar

That didn’t come out right. Please let us edit our mistakes in forum threads, too.

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes, yes, *please* – if you can’t improve the functionalty with more editing choices , *please* give me the choice to go back to the old editor.

I took the premium upgrade because I figured I lliked WordPress so much I wanted to stay here. Now it takes me four times as much time to edit my photo’s and fit them right in my posts. It’s ridiculous.

And anyone figure out how to make the images “open in another tab/window”??? Since that option is no longer at the bottom and there is no “Advanced” setting I can find.
The input boxes make it more difficult to just add lines to existing images, whatever they did they’ve effectively Killed my whole posting method!!!
Can’t we “choose” then which “editor” we want or is this how WordPress operates now, break stuff that doesn’t need fixing and just shove it up our posthole huh?

  • Unknown's avatar

@deaddogbarking: Open in another tab will have to be done in the text/html editor now just as precise image sizing and the title tag (hover text).

  • Unknown's avatar

Sorry, forgot to include the code:

    target=”_blank”

The silence on this issue from WP is deafening!

Well, it hasn’t been that many hours. This thread IS tagged for staff attention. In my experience don’t expect an apology; expect a “here’s why this is awesome” post.
