Why did you change the delete-subscription-to-follow-up-comments page?

  • Unknown's avatar

I think that the new page that results after we click on “Unsubscribe from all follow-up comments” is confusing. Logically, reading left to right, I would expect the FIRST choice to be the reason we clicked on the link (“Yes, I want to delete my subscription”). Instead, it’s to stop ALL emails.

Also, the choice to stop getting follow-up comments should read, “Yes I want to delete my subscription [to follow-up comments].”

The first time I encountered this page, I made the wrong choice–to stop all emails. As presented, the 2 choices are in the wrong order, too similar, and therefore confusing.

    Hey John!

Thanks for the feedback here. I just went through the process using the links you mentioned. When I receive a new comment notification, here are the links I see:

    http://d.pr/i/12ROA

When I clicked that “Unsubscribe from all follow-up comments” link, I was just unsubscribed from the comment section. Is that the option you’re referring to?

Yes, but the result you’re getting just changed TODAY. Recently (for a week? Two weeks?) what’s been happening when I clicked on “Unsubscribe from all follow-up comments,” is that I would get THIS screen: https://thedailygraff.files.wordpress.com/2015/03/delete-your-subscription.jpg

This is what I based my comments on about it being confusing.

Ah – I understand. Thanks for clarifying. In the screenshot you sent over, was that a site you were following with your WordPress.com account (followed while logged in) or one that you followed by just entering your email? Has the behavior updated to what I described now? Still getting to the bottom of this!

Jeremey–In every case, the comments came from blogging friends I have followed for months or years ( using my WordPress.com account).

And the problem has not been resolved. This follow-up comment came from a good friend’s blog at 3:30 this afternoon: https://thedailygraff.files.wordpress.com/2015/03/latest-comment.jpg

And this is the screen I got after clicking on the “Unsubscribe from all follow-up comments” link: https://thedailygraff.files.wordpress.com/2015/03/delete-your-subscription2.jpg (Note in the lower left corner of this 2nd screen, that it’s the comment in question).

BTW, I am generally THRILLED with improvements your tech people make. Their changes almost always make a process more user-friendly. This is a rare change that complicates things over what we were getting before.

Jeremy–It gets even stranger. I just now clicked on that SAME “Unsubscribe from …” link (in the same comment) and got a simple notice that I had been unsubscribed from all follow-up comments (which is the result you said that you got earlier).

It seems that this process is not stable–that the same action can result in different outcomes.

It gets even STRANGER stranger. This is the correct screen I finally got: https://thedailygraff.files.wordpress.com/2015/03/correct-unsubscribe-screen.jpg

BUT, I forgot to mention that occasionally when I clicked on the unsubscribe link in a comment, I got THIS screen: https://thedailygraff.files.wordpress.com/2015/03/blog-subscriptions.jpg

As I said, something isn’t stable in the unsubscribe-from-follow-up-comments process.

UPDATE (not an April Fool’s joke):

This morning I was unable to unsubscribe from this comment: https://thedailygraff.files.wordpress.com/2015/04/failed-attempt.jpg

because I’m getting this screen every time I click on the “Unsubscribe from . . .” link: https://thedailygraff.files.wordpress.com/2015/04/unsubscribe-from-blog.jpg

    Hey John,

Thanks for the additional info here, particularly the screenshots. They’re really helpful for digging into what might be going on. You’re correct in that this is the screen that should be appearing when you visit subscribe.wordpress.com (where you can manage all subscriptions):

I went through this a few more times. Here’s the link I’m clicking in my email:

    http://d.pr/i/1euqL

Once I click that, I get taken to this screen:

    http://d.pr/i/1gGLX

I’m using the option on the right-hand side of the screen to remove subscriptions for this particular post.

You mentioned being unable to unsubscribe from the comment here:

If you visit the “Comments” tab here, do you see that subscription still listed?

I realize you have quite a few comment subscriptions, but based on the timestamp of that post, it should appear on the front page here:

    Status

I’m not seeing it there. Perhaps you already unsubscribed, which is why when you click the link in the email, you’re taken to the generic subscriptions page (since it doesn’t find that subscription).

Jeremey–Thanks for all of your digging (and your patience). I think that you’ve explained the dynamics of why I’m getting different results.

However, my comments in my very first message in this thread apply to this screen : http://d.pr/i/1gGLX

I think that the position of the boxes should be reversed, and the the box for deleting comments should be clarified with a few additional words:

“Yes I want to delete my subscription [to follow-up comments].”

To get to this screen the person clicked on a link to unsubscribe them from follow-up comments. Why should the FIRST choice presented (on the left) be to end ALL e-mails from all comments from all blogs?

Thanks John! I’ll make sure that suggestion is heard.
