Why didn't autosave save?

  • Unknown's avatar

I needed to cut and paste a sentence on a different spot and after that everything I’ve written since the last manual save was gone. I couldn’t even get it back with the undo button. Needless to say, I cannot rewrite everything the way it was. I need back what I had written!!!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

to clarify, I pasted the sentence in the same article. only changed the position in the text

You may be able to recover a post revision. Go to Posts > All Posts, hover over the title of the post, click Edit and check the Post Revisions module for previous saved versions of the post. http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/post-revisions/

If you’re not seeing the Revisions module while on the editor screen, click Screen Options (top right corner of your Admin page) http://en.support.wordpress.com/screen-options/ to activate it. Then select the post and page modules to include them. http://en.support.wordpress.com/modules/#list-of-modules Then you ought to be able to go here > Dashboard > All Posts > Posts and locate the post and recover it from post revisions.

If you cannot locate the post for locating and restoring a post revision, and it’s not in your Trash folder http://en.support.wordpress.com/trash/ then you will not be able to recover it. http://en.support.wordpress.com/trash/#restoring-from-trash

Did you create your post on the dashboard of your own blog?
Dashboard > Posts > All Posts > Add New

Or did you create your post on the front page of WordPress.com?
    http://wordpress.com/#!/post/

    Advice:
Create your posts on the dashboard of your own blog
Dashboard > Posts > All Posts > Add New

Or use an offline blog editor so you always have backups on your own computer http://en.support.wordpress.com/xml-rpc/

autosave is supposed to save every 2 minutes. Well, it didn’t save anything, as I couldn’t even use “undo” to get it back.
I did write from my own dashboard and I checked trash. Nothing!

  • Unknown's avatar

what good is “undo” and autosave when they don’t work?

  • Unknown's avatar

well, I guess thanks for nothing

  • Unknown's avatar

Autosave doesn’t work if you use the New Post button on the grey Admin bar. It’s a bug that’s been known for months. TT gave you the best advice we have, and she didn’t design the buggy page, so there’s no point in being sharp with her.

I provided the only help we can provide.

    Advice:
Create your posts on the dashboard of your own blog only
Dashboard > Posts > All Posts > Add New

Or use an offline blog editor so you always have backups on your own computer http://en.support.wordpress.com/xml-rpc/

    @raincoaster
I did not follow my own advice this morning and I lost a post that was around 1000 words in length. I have no one to direct my anger at but myself but being angry does create a new post, so I didn’t choose to keep feeling angry. I chose to start trying to reconstruct it.

  • Unknown's avatar

raincoaster, I was not sharp at all.
If it is known that something doesn’t work, it should be taken off until it is fixed!
I usually keep a backup file running as I type, but this time I did not and wordpress failed me in the worst way possible. If voicing this is sharp, then so be it.
The least I could expect is an apology, but not even that was offered!

  • Unknown's avatar

If you expect an apology from me you aren’t getting one. I did not create this issue. I am a Volunteer and I have helped many people who were able to reclaim a post revision by using the instructions I posted above. As for sharp there are different definitions of that I’m too sharp to waste my time waiting crying the blues and waiting for apologies that won’t happen and won’t bring back my post. apologies. I chose to recreate my post instead.

  • Unknown's avatar

then I congratulate you to be able to just recreate a post. I wonder what real authors would say, if their writing was deleted for no reason. There is no such thing as just recreating. Well, unless it’s nothing substantial.

I understand that you are a volunteer and do help many people, but it wouldn’t hurt to express a little empathy to someone who lost an hours work.
Your response was close to that of a machine and felt like you don’t give a damn beyond your automated response. Bet you have that saved somewhere and even just copy and paste.

  • Unknown's avatar

    I am a published author.

  • Unknown's avatar

good for you. So you should understand even more how it feels to loose work

  • Unknown's avatar

We are both real authors. We are here to provide tech support, not emotional support, and professionals don’t expect emotional support from strangers in tech support forums.

  • Unknown's avatar

I am multitasking from work where I am the boss. No I don’t have a back-up saved anywhere that I can just copy and paste from – rats! So I guess that leaves us in the same position ie. pacifying our inner child and moving on.

  • Unknown's avatar

am not asking for emotional support, but it is common courtesy to at least say sorry you lost your work, let me see if we can retrieve it.
Is that really too much to ask? No offer of retrieval was made at any time

  • Unknown's avatar

as far as I’m concerned I’m done talking to you, as you obviously don’t get the point.
I will present my case to a higher authority.

  • The volunteers here do get your point, but they’re volunteers, they aren’t paid to do what they do. They’re just here to help in their free time because they enjoy helping people, turning frowns into smiles, and they’re just all around good people.

Was the post in question ever saved as a draft prior to it being lost? If so, what is the title?

We have some big auto-save changes arriving very soon, which should prevent this situation from ever happening again.

  • Unknown's avatar

It was saved as a draft ones before it disappeared.
The title is “Child abuse – Where do we draw the line?”
