Shawnajroberts, Hi I haven’t heard back from you in regards to my problem with pings. I gave you the two links as you asked. So what am I doing wrong? Why aren’t any of my posts showing up in the challenges?

So sorry for the delay. The second link you gave directed me here:

Which lands on a 404 Not Found error page. I popped into your posts real quick to see if I could find the right post, it looks like this is the link you meant:

That post doesn’t seem to have any link to the Photo Challenge post, which means that there won’t be a pingback. In order to add a pingback, and have your response appear on the listed challenge, just add a link to your post before you publish. Once your post has already been published, adding a link won’t cause a pingback to happen, so it has to be added before you publish your post.

Here’s an example of a short post with an active ping back. You can see they made the word ‘relic’ a link to the photo challenge page:

Thanks Shawna for the help. I think I will have to read up on how to do links because I don’t know how the example you showed me made the word Relic link back to the challenge page. Nevertheless as I said I will read up on it including the support link you gave me. I just feel so stupid and out of my element trying to learn all of this stuff. I really appreciate you telling me that I have to do it before I publish though.

Of course! Let me know if you have any questions about creating links. I’m sure you can figure it out. That support page about creating links is the perfect place to start.
Just to explain a little bit about why you need a link in order for your post to appear on the challenge page. A “pingback” is something that happens when you add a link to your site. Your site will “ping” the site you’ve linked to, basically letting it know that you’ve linked to them.
We utilize that pingback feature here at WordPress.com in a few different ways. On your own site, pingbacks can be displayed in your comment threads (basically an additional way to show that someone has shared your post).
On the photo challenge pages, we have some extra formatting so that we can showcase everyone’s responses to the challenge.

Sorry to bother you Shawna but I just realized that if I can only do this link/ping thing before I publish then that means that all of my previous failed attempts can’t be corrected now because the posts have already been published……correct?
Second question….some of my posts said that they were pinged if I went in to edit something but they weren’t showing up on the challenge pages. What happened in those cases? -

Correct. The only way to add pingbacks to these posts is to create a new post with the link in it. You can always back date a post by clicking the edit button next to the publish date in the publishing module in the editor.

Hi Shawna, Great news!!!!! I actually managed to get a post to link and show up on this week’s photo challenge. I am so happy to have finally managed this stupid hurdle!
The thing that I kept missing was to check off the link box on the right hand side of the post writing/editing page so that then the link icon became usable in the top toolbar. I hope that makes sense. I don’t remember anyone ever mentioning that I had to do that. Oh well.
Don’t worry about my last question because it only says pinged if you actually open up the post to edit it, so no big deal now that I know how to link properly. Thanks so much for you help Amanda -
Perfect! I’m so glad you got this working! :)
You shouldn’t need to select “Link” from the menu on the right in order to use the link icon in the toolbar. It should become active any time you highlight text in the editor.

Well for some reason I do have to check the link button in the side bar, and although I’m doing everything I did before sometimes my posts still don’t link!! I don’t know what I’m missing.
