why do advertisements display?

  Why do advertisements display? I’m already paying you $30/year for the Custom Design upgrade! I have been with WordPress for several years. You would think that a good vendor would grandfather their loyal customers from having to pay this new $30 NoAds fee! I’m extremely disappointed in WordPress! Instead of making more money to “pay the bills” , your customers, including me, are leaving for a more reasonably priced blog service. This is a huge marketing blunder!

  To support the service (and keep free features free), we sometimes run advertisements, and the agreement for this has been in our terms of service since 2006.

  The Custom Design upgrade only pays for the font licensing, while the ads and No-Ads upgrade pay for the service costs, like hosting, hardware, bandwidth, personnel, etc.
