Why do browers say my certificate is invalid?

When I type my URL into Safari or Firefox, a message pops up asking if I trust the certificate of the website. I don’t want this to happen to anyone who tries to visit my website. Please help!

  • That should only happen if you’re accessing your site through https://threesqs.org/ rather than the standard http://threesqs.org/ or going to the Dashboard.

Basically, this is just a warning that’s a little bit misguided, but means well.

To explain it briefly, due to domain mapping, your domain is threesqs.org. Now, secure SSL certificates need to be signed to a specific domain, and browsers look for that domain to match the site you’re looking at. Of course, we can’t provide a new SSL certificate for every mapped domain, so your certificate is signed for WordPress.com.

So, your browser visits threesqs.org, but sees the certificate for WordPress.com, and presents the warning to make sure that you trust WordPress.com to handle your connection details, which of course you do. Most browsers allow you to permanently ignore this notice.

Regular visiters to http://threesqs.org/ won’t see the notice.
